Part 1: Environmental Threats to Life on Earth Lila - Net ionic equations and Pictures

Climate Change Climate change is the significant and lasting change in the weather patterns over periods of time ranging millions of years. The consequences are change in average weather conditions with more or fewer extreme weather events. Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variation in solar radiation, plate tectonics and volcanic eruptions. In this case, the main cause deviates towards human activities that cause a rise in CO2 emitted thus raising the atmosphere temperature. If the temperature of the Earth rises, glacial ice caps may melt and cause the sea level to rise drastically, closing in on coasts where millions of people live.

The affect: There will be an increase in temperature and droughts. This will lead to agriculture depletion, as well as increase the worlds homeless people. Animals such as the Salmon will be threatened by the changing stream flows, because they will not be able to spawn up streams and because of the increase population of pests. The sea level will rise overriding the land, which will lose its beaches and give way to erosion. Fresh water will become scarce and lead to water territory fights. Costal communities will have many more storm, floods, typhoons, hurricanes ect. Interesting Fact- the temperature of the world as increased one degree fahrenheit since 1990.

Oxidized: Water Pollution Water pollution affect plants and organisms and is damaging in almost all cases, especially in the natural biological communities. Dirty water is the world's biggest health risk; toxic chemicals, bacteria, dirt trash, and disease carrying organisms often are the pollutants, being picked up from melted snow or rainwater. The polluters mainly consist of factory farms, industrial plants, and activities like fracking. This leads to drinking water contamination, habitat degradation, and beach closures. Soil contamination is caused by the presence of human-made chemicals or other alteration in the soil environment. Typically caused by industrial activity, agricultural chemicals, or improper disposal of waste. Most common chemicals are petroleum hydrocarbons, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, solvents, pesticides, lead and other heavy metals. The concern lies mainly in health risks, these toxins are carcinogenic and may contribute to developmental problems in children, as well as other medical conditions. CH3Br + H2O CH0 + Br Depleting ozone layer The catalytic destruction of the ozone layer is caused by atomic halogens. The main sources of these halogens are photodissociation of man-made halocarbon refirgerants like CFCs, Freons, halons. Less ozone means less protection from the UVB rays. UVB rays cause malignant melanoma development and has been linked to cataracts. The depletion of the ozone layer affects plants, marine ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles, and materials like synthetic polymers. Decomposition Cl + O ClO + O (g) 4 ClO + 2O 2Cl (g) +3O (g)

Not a redox reaction. Air pollution Air pollution is caused by the introduction of chemicals, particulates or biological materials into the atmosphere. The materials otherwise would cause discomfort, disease, or death to humans, damage other living organisms such as food crops, or damage the natural environment or built environment. These toxins are inhaled and caused many health problems for humans such as asthma or any bronchial conditions. The effects somewhat mirror smoking. O + NO NO + O
