The Story of Ch'unhyang

Ch'unhyang-jon is the love story between Song Ch'unhyang (the daughter of Wolmae, a former kisaeng, a female entertainer) and Yi Mong Yong (the son of the county's chief magistrate) who strive to overcome their differences in social class and other difficulties.

1. A Visit to Gwanghallu Pavilion Young nobleman Yi Mong Yong, walking to Gwanghallu Pavilion, sees Ch'unhyang on a swing in the distance. He asks his servant Pangja who the woman is.

2. The Meeting with Yi Mong Yong Escorted by Pangja, Yi Mong Yong visits Ch'unhyang's mother, Wolmae, and asks for her daughter's hand in marriage.

3. The Marriage Proposal Ch'unhyang and Yi Mong Yong pledge their eternal love to each other, despite any obstacles that may occur.

4. Parting in Tears Yi Mong Yong leaves with his parents because of his father's new position in Hanyang, the capital of the kingdom. Ch'unhyang bids him a tearful farewell from Orijong Pavilion.

5. The Newly-Appointed Magistrate The new magistrate, Pyon Hakdo, neglects the affairs of the county and instead spends his time carousing with kisaengs.

6. Ch'unhyang's Refusal Because Ch'unhyang continuously refuses Magistrate Pyon's advances, he has her beaten repeatedly and locked in prison.

7. The Reunion in Prison After earning first place in the state examinations, Yi Mong Yong is appointed an undercover inspector for the government. Disguised as a beggar, he attempts to contact Ch'unhyang in prison.

8. The Surprise Appearance of the Inspector Magistrate Pyon plans to execute Ch'unhyang at his birthday banquet when undercover inspector Yi Mong Yong, determined to punish the corrupt official, breaks into the banquet hall with his militia men behind him.

9. They Live Happily Ever After Despite her terrible ordeal, Ch'unhyang remained faithful to her fiance. She is finally reunited with her beloved Yi Mong Yong, who will protect her for the rest of her life.
