Security Council
Dear Delegates, Welcome to the 42nd annual Metropolitan Model United Nations Conference at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School! We are looking forward to meeting you all and discussing some of the most pressing issues in our world today. The original UN Charter established, among other committees, the Security Council (SC). Its primary responsibility is to maintain international peace and security, and it may meet whenever peace is threatened. The Security Council is characterized by its unique structure five core members of the committee, collectively known as the P5, possess veto power during voting periods. The P5 nations include the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia. The other ten members of the committee rotate every few years. Over the course of our two-day conference, we will be debating issues that profoundly affect all nations. The specific topics for this conference are as follow: State-Sponored Espionage and Surveillance of Other Governments, the Situation in Chechnya, and the Sudan-South Sudan conflict. We hope that you will all work together to think of creative solutions to these problems and pass relevant and impactful resolutions. We look forward to meeting you all and engaging in debate!
