Kelsey Parks Brown ENGL 1101 Arrival-ing Questions, Part I The Arrival PART 1: 8 Questions 1.

.) Give your overall impressions of the text (3/4 sentences) Overall, I thought the Arrival was a very interesting and unique book. I have read both novels with and without images, however this was the first novel I have ever read without words. The authors ability to tell an entire story through the use of imagery was admirable and definitely forced me to think outside-of-the-box. I particularly enjoyed how the author left some of the imagery up to interpretation of the reader. It allowed the reader to read the story while also creating their own version of the same story. 2.) What is your favorite part/image/event of the text? Why? My favorite part of the text is the image of the harbor. In this image there are tons of insignificant onlookers watching the harbor. It is in what appears to be a city setting, thanks to the many tall buildings in the background. You also can see two large hands shaking. I like this picture because, I believe it is portraying unity. 3.) What is your least favorite? Why? My least favorite image is The City. This is my least favorite because, it shows hundreds of citizens running as giant men vacuum them up and destroy the city. I dont particularly enjoy this picture because it is quite frightening and depressing. 4.) Do the muted sepia color tones help influence how you receive the story? How so? The muted sepia color tones definitely help influences how the reader receives the story because as the story progresses the colors change. The mood of each page, or point in the story, is set by the color tone. It helps the reader understand what feeling they should have in reaction to each picture. 5.) Do you think the images are actual, true memories recorded as they truly were? Or, are the images expressionist-style artworks that are memories turned into abstracts? Or both? What makes you state this? The images are definitely expressionist-style artworks that are memories turned into abstracts. I state this because the work is very distorted. The portrayal of animals seem closer to robots and all physical objects are altered into objects that are not real. 6.) Does the lack of words help or hurt the story of the traveler for you? Why? (the intention is to give you the feeling he has of being a person lost in a totally foreign culture, with no common language, goods, ideas, but for some, the method does not work)

The lack of words hurts the story of the traveler because it is left to my interpretation. The true story of the traveler is hurt because I may interpret it differently than the authors intention. However it does help portray the feeling of the traveler. My frustration and feelings of being lost and confused directly correlate with that of the traveler throughout the story. 7.) Could you? Could you make the choice the Traveler does, and immigrate away from all youve ever known, all your loved ones, leaving them behind, even possible to face some horrible disaster all in the hopes of seeking a better future? I could not make the choice the Traveler does. Though I admire his determination and perseverance, I do not possess the qualities to abandon everything and everyone Ive ever known.
