Emergence of Professional Sports

Studied at Springfield College, MA. While attending, Morgan met James Naismith, inventor of Basketball. Both pursued careers in Physical Education at the YMCA.

In1896, Morgan became part of the Director of Physical Education. His role was to establish programs & classes for male adults.

Morgan realize he needed a certain type of competitive recreational game to vary his programs.

Unlike basketball, Morgan wanted to create a sport that was less violent & less intense for the older people.

In 1896, Morgan revealed and presented his new, creative idea. He called this new idea of a sport, Mintonette. Dr. Alfred Hastead renamed the sport Volleyball after watching Morgan demonstrate it to his students

In 1900, left the YMCA to pursue various business careers. Married Mary King Caldwell. Had four children together.

I agree with William Morgan because he wanted to get the older adults involve in physical activity since the sports was originally for the younger crowd.
