SC.CC. K-3.1-Identify distinct structures in the body. EEDA Standard 5- Contextual Teaching EEDA Standard 6- Cooperative Learning

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: At the end of this week students will take a field trip to the zoo. Leading up to this trip students have been identifying different animals that they will see during their visit. They have previously identified a zebra and a lion. The students also have previous knowledge of writing words and knowing where to place the lettering on the correct lines. Students will use art connections by coloring the giraffe the appropriate colors. Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
. Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Students will be assessed by demonstrating they can follow directions by spelling and writing letters correctly. Students will follow the teacher on a labeling sheet and copy directions on how to spell each part of a giraffes body. Students will use prior knowledge to place each letter in the appropriate position on the sheet. If the lettering is wrong, student s will be asked to erase it and correct the lettering. Students will also be asked questions to describe the parts of the body they will be labeling. At the end of the assessment students will use this information to describe the giraffe when we see them at the zoo and also know what color the giraffe is. Use of Formative Assessment Individual performance will help me determine how well the students were able to comprehend the information given. If there are students who are still not understand letter placement I will go back at center time and work with these students to understand not only the correct parts of a giraffe, but where to place letters on the given lines. Were the students able to follow my directions and copy the same directions on their own paper? The result of this assessment will determine what to do for the lessons to follow. At this point students should have mastered letter placement. For those who have not, they will be pulled aside at a different time to perfect writing words.

The learner will label the parts of a giraffe and use correct spelling and letter placement.

Accommodations:
Early finishers will be allowed to draw their favorite animal on the back on their giraffe work sheet. Since the activity is also the assessment there will be little to no help from the teacher. I will use this activity to see where students stand with writing and labeling. For those students who do not comprehend the information I will pull them aside at a later time and go back and work on their writing.

Materials:
Giraffe worksheet Pencil Crayons Giraffe Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qvO-0G8ZTA Projector Elmo

Procedures:
I will introduce the lesson as followed: Who can tell me where we are going this week? We are going to the zoo on Friday and all this week we have learned about a different animal that we are going to see at the zoo. Today we are going to learn about a giraffe. First we are going to watch a short video about giraffe facts. I am going to read what the video is saying and when the video is over I am going to ask you one fact that you learned about giraffes. (Show video) Who can tell me one new fact that they learned about giraffes? Now we are going to go back to our seats and get out a journals and pencils. Once you get those things out look up at me. We are going to flip to the giraffe page of our journals; it will be the third sheet. We are now going to talk through the parts of this giraffe. Who can raise their hand and tell me what this part of the giraffe is? Lets chew that word up and see what letter it starts with. What letter does this word start with? Now I am going to write this word down and everyone needs to copy the word on the lines beside the body part. I will continue this with each body part asking the same prompting questions. After we have labeled each body part, I will ask students, from what we have seen in the video, what colors are we going to use to color in this giraffe? We should use a brown; we can also use a tan and black. I will then allow students to color in the giraffe picture. While they are coloring I will go around seeing if they have spelled each word correctly and if they have the proper labeling on each body part. For those who finish early they will be allowed to draw their favorite animal on the back. After I have checked everyone paper I will ask each group to put their papers in the cubbies and return to the carpet for the next lesson. Probing Questions: Who can tell me where we are going this week? Who can tell me one new fact they learned about giraffes? What body part is this called? What colors are we going to use to color in the giraffe?

Activity Analysis:
For the first activity we will be using a Youtube video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qvO-0G8ZTA This video will give facts about giraffes that the students do not already know. This activity will use only technology to show that the student is able to assess the knowledge from the video and relay the information back to me. During this activity students will be sitting in the floor on the carpet. This video is very short and informative and should keep the students attention. The second activity students will be using a worksheet to show labeling of a giraffe. I will demonstrate the correct spelling and letter placement using the ELMO so students can see it large while they are at their seat, and students will be asked to demonstrate the same information on their own papers. I will assess this activity by ensuring that student labeled the correct things as well as know how to write their letters.
