Instructional Activity:

At the beginning of the )ro*ect+ the students #ill indi%idually create "-&charts on the animal they ha%e chosen to research. "-&- charts #ill hel) assess the information they are loo'ing for in order to com)lete their data charts. ,his acti%ity #ill be demonstrated as a #hole class in order to sho# the students #hat e-actly to loo' for #hile researching their animal. ,his acti%ity is great in order to introduce the to)ic and get the students e-cited about learning more information regarding their animal .,om)'ins 2//01. ,he students #ill research an animal of their choice from 2ational Geogra)hic "ids and3or from the 4an !iego 5oo for "ids #ebsite. Once their animal has been selected they #ill create data charts in order to organi(e information regarding their animal. !ata charts encourage students to thin' about the information they are researching. ,hey must then determine ho# this information can be incor)orated into a data chart that relates to their animal to)ic .,om)'ins+ 2//01. ,he data chart #ill include6 #hat the animal loo's li'e+ #hat food they eat+ #here they li%e and #hat their life cycle loo's li'e. ,he 7ig8 method #ill be used throughout this acti%ity .9ills+ 2//81. ,he students #ill begin by identifying information by first using the "-&- chart. ,hey #ill then begin brainstorming #hat animal they #ould li'e to research from the 2ational Geogra)hic #ebsite or the 4an !iego 5oo #ebsite. ,hey #ill then find information on the animal they ha%e chosen to research from these t#o sources. ,he students #ill then determine #hat information is im)ortant to include in the data chart they #ill be creating. ,he information #ill then be organi(ed into the data charts. :inally+ the teacher #ill e%aluate the data charts. ,his )rocess #ill hel) students in their research .9ills+ 2//81. ,he students #ill be told that their research #ill be assessed based on their data charts. It is im)ortant to include this information because the students deser%e to 'no# ho# they #ill be scored .&ong ; &ong+ 2//01. Including this information )ro%ides focus to the students. ,hey are also more li'ely to be engaged in their research and in creating com)lete data charts .&ong ; &ong+ 2//01.
