De La Torre 1 Alejandra De La Torre John Kubler English 114A 3 September 2013 They Say/ I Say Chapter 12 The main

idea in chapter 12 of They Say/ I Say is to figure out why the author said it or wrote it. The main argument is a response to an argument that provoked it giving us a reason to care. The trick in reading for the conversation is to figure out what views the author is responding to and what the authors own argument is (147). Readers need to be alert because the writers can change in voice and summarize others view that is not their own. The say and I say can be a challenge in reading because it is difficult identifying which is which. Chapter 12 asks us to take a deeper look in what the writer is trying to say. It is not to listen to what the writer is trying to say, but to understand the writer. You also have to be able to interpret the writers word in your own words. The authors also suggest us to think more critically instead of just taking the word at its face value.
