Re: Street vendors during the Repul
National Convention
Dear Sergeant Gleason:
‘The Urban Justice Center represents an organized group of licensed street vendors
who regularly vend in the area of Madison Square Garden. These vendors, many of
whom have vended in that area for years, are an important part of the neighborhood.
They have regular customers and amicable relationships with surrounding store
owners
With the Republican National Convention coming to the neighborhood on August
30th through September 2nd, 2004, the vendors are concemed that their livelihoods
will be affected by street closings and other security measures that are expected to be
put in place.
We understand that the Police Department has a legitimate need for security during
this historic occasion, At the same time, we wili be working to limit the adverse
impact on these vendors who are prime stakeholders in the neighborhood. T hope we
can work together in a spirit of cooperation.
A good initial step will be to inform us of the Police Department's plans for these
venidors before and during the convention. For example, assuming that cersin blocks
will be closed to vending, which will be closed, and when? To no avail I have
searched the RNC and NYPD websites for this information. I have also left phone
‘messages for Lt. Albano and you on this matter.
Please contact me at your earliest possible convenience so that we may begin working
together to ensure that the rights of street vendors are taken into consideration as the
NYPD plans for the convention,
sincerely,
YC
