LTC 4240: Art for Children Lesson Title & Big Idea*: Change in plants, community, and identity Lesson Overview/Summary*: The students will look at people or actions in their community that inspire them to be an active citizen. Each student will write a goal they want to accomplish that will have a positive influence on the community or the people around them. The students will sketch different ideas of how they can take steps to reach this goal. When each student has a goal in mind and and worksheet complete, the students will be given an empty flowerpot to paint/decorate representing the steps they will take to reach this goal. When the flowerpots are decorated and dried, we will then plant a seed into our soil. We will discuss, even though we cant see the flower yet, with nurturing and care we know it is slowly growing each day. And relate this to our active citizenship goal, even though its not making a huge difference in one day over time, working towards our goal each day over time it will. The students will keep a journal writing in it each week reflecting on the growth of their plant, what they are doing to reach their goal, and keeping track of the progress that is being made in growth of plants, community, and identity. As the students continue on with their goal, and there plant becomes to big for their little pot, the students will be asked to decorate a larger pot portraying the change in what they have learned, experienced, and gained from reaching their goal. The students will create an artist statement about their pot, and will create a advocating poster encouraging other to make a goal that will make a difference in the community. Grade Level*: 4 Class Periods Required: (please circle) 1 2 3

More than 3

Key Concepts (3-4): *Telling a story/ Sending a personal message through the use of art *Using Active Citizenship to make a difference in our community *What it takes to accomplish a goal *Looking at a plant in relation to change and how it relates to their own personal growth

Essential Questions (3-4)*: What can we do as active citizens to make a difference in our community? How can we relate the change of a growing plant to the development of a goal? How can we relate the full grown plant to the change we have see in our community?

Lesson Objectives: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): Students will be able to critically look at and compare the change/growth in their plant they see over time to the change/growth of their personal goal. Students will be able to identify what things make each of them grow and how they are a like and similar. Students will be able to use visuals to represent change in both the beginning and end of the lesson. Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) (3-4) (http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/curriculum/GLE/) Strand I: Demonstrate an additive process that represents change Strand I: Create an original artwork that communicates ideas about Identify & define common vocabulary that connect the art form with the other identified content areas: Goal

Art Integration Lesson Plan Template 2 community and identity Strand V: Compare and Contrast two artworks on subject matter, theme, and purpose of art. Growth Creativity Imagination Symbol Additives Passion Lesson Activities & Procedure(s) (please be very specific): 1. I will ask the students what kind of changes they would like to see in the community and we will create a class list 2. Each student will be asked to narrow it down to one thing they feel strongly about and to make a sketch of how they would go about making this change 3. Once the students are done sketching we will do a think pair share with our neighbors about what we chose 4. We will then begin to discuss how a goal takes time, determination, and attention and we will relate this to a flower 5. We then will do our flower worksheet, where the students will put their goal in the middle of the flower, and the petals will be the steps they need to take to reach their goal. At the bottom they will sketch how they view their goal with what it means to them. 6. The students will be given journals where they write about the progress they are making with their goal and their plant that they write in throughout the week. I will check them once a week with feedback. 7. We as a class with look at the change we see in our goals and plants and make this connection 8. As the plant is full grown we will reflect on how far their goal has come along, what change have we seen? 9. We will now decorate a new pot, with what we have learned throughout this lesson. We will use this pot to transport their plant so that it can continue to grow at home. 10. The students will make an artist statement about their pot. 11. The students will also be creating an advocating poster for their goal, that will encourage others to make a difference as well. 12. We will hang our posters around the school building hoping to encourage other students to make a goal. Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set):

Content Areas Integrated*: 1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artist: El Anatsui) 2. Literacy 3. Social Studies- Active Citizenship 4. Science

Anticipatory Set (Gaining Attention)*:

Art Integration Lesson Plan Template 3 We will talk about things we want to change in the community. We will create a class list of ideas. The students will be asked to pick one they felt strongly about. I will ask the students to sketch images that represent this change they want to see and pair share with their neighbor about what their sketch represents. We will then begin to relate this idea to the growth of a plant. Once our plant grows to be too large for our pot, the students will be given a large pot that they once again get to use as a canvas to tell their story of change. These plants are now theirs to take how and continue to help it grow. The students will do one last reflection about what this has taught them, and will explain why they chose the form of art they did in the final product. Students should be able to explain how their artwork it relates to change and the growth of their goal.

Formative Assessment strategy: The formal assessment will be the final flowerpot they have decorated, and the written reflection they turn in on the last day. Students should be able to explain how their artwork represents change and the growth of their goal. Students should be able to make connections between What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? Students will review what growth is. Students will review basic painting skills and collage skills

Summative Assessment strategy*: The journals the students write in weekly will be a reflection of what the students are learning and what misconceptions they are having about the lesson.

How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson? When students complete the flower worksheet, they will be imagining what they can do as active citizens to make a difference. Students will be exploring different ways we can represent change in an artistic form onto a flower pot. Students will be experimenting with the change a goal can make and the changes a plant make.

How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways? *Students will take a look at the world around them and question what they can do as fourth graders to solve this problem. Some may be bigger than others, but students will critically think about what they can do to help. *Telling a story through art isnt as literal as writing them with words, students are asked to figuratively show me their goals and how they will obtain their goal through the use of art whether it be with shapes, texture, or actual drawings. *Students are asked to look at more than just the parts of the flower, the students are asked to look at the plant as an analogy for their goal. (EX. IF the water is what is helping the plant grow, what would the water of your goal be?) The plant represents more than just the flower pot.

Art Integration Lesson Plan Template 4 How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? The students will be keeping a journal reflecting on both the growth they see in their plant, how often they water it, are they keeping up with their goal, are they witnessing change? At first the students will have trouble writing about the growth they see in either, but with time they will be able to expand and think critically about how both are related. How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abeled students? *Some goals may have to be modified for students who may not be able to access the community- in this case we will look at personal goals something they can do to better themselves. What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work? Students will have their journal to keep track of the progress they are making towards their goal, and to track the progress of their plant. I will be responding to them weekly to give feedback on the connections they are or are not making.

What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson? The class blog will have progress of our plants with artist statements. The students will also be able to take their plants home at the end of the lesson, where they can share their artist statement with their family and friends.
