Teacher Candidate: Acacia Garcia Subject/Grade: Math/Kindergarten

Lesson # 2 Date and Time of Lesson: 10/29/2013 @ 9:50a.m.

Learning Objective: The students will identify the location of at least three 2-dimensional shapes using appropriate positional vocabulary making a scarecrow. Alignment with Standards: Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: K.G.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. SC Visual Arts Standards: VAK-3.2 Select and use appropriate subject matter, symbols, and ideas to communicate his or her ideas through works of visual art. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Students will have prior knowledge of 2-dimensional shapes and be able to recognize shapes such as circle, triangle, rectangle, square, and hexagon. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) The teacher will have cutouts of different shapes in random positions. The students will then be asked to relocate the shapes. (Ex. Place the square below the rectangle) Using the smart board, students will identify the positions of different 2dimensional shapes in a picture. (Ex. The square is behind the circle) After, four students will come up to the front of the class and then, raising their hands, the other students will use positional phrases to describe where the students are located. (Ex. Bob is in front of Kate) The students will listen to where the 2-dimensional shapes should be located, Use of Formative Assessment I will use the assessment data for future instruction on 2dimensional shapes and 3-dimensional shapes. Students will be able to learn how to recognize the difference between 2-dimensional and 3dimensional shapes and what they look like next to each other. They will also be able to create different shapes using clay or sticks.

Pre-Assessment: Using 2dimensional shapes, students will be able to relocate each shape by using positional phrases.

During Assessment: Using the smart board and students, the class will relocate the shape/students using positional phrase vocabulary.

Post-Assessment: The students will create a scarecrow made of 2-

dimensional shapes and place them according to the positional phrase that is called out by the teacher.

according to the teachers instructions, and they will place the shapes accurately to create a scarecrow. Their work will be collected in order to review.

Accommodations: Early finishers will work on an assigned handout given by the cooperating teacher. For the slower paced learners, the teacher will make sure they are able to have enough time to glue their shapes where they need them to be by walking around the class and keeping an eye on how they are doing. If a student with special needs is having difficulty, the teacher will explain the position of the shapes in a clearer perspective in order for the student to better understand what they need to do. Materials: Smart board Pictures that have 2-dimensional shapes to use on smart board 2-dimensional shape cutoutscircle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagoncut out by the teacher Glue sticks Construction paperblue, green, yellow, red, brown Procedures: 1. Before beginning the lesson, materials will be laid out on the students desks in order to make the transition from whole group smoother. 2. Begin the lesson by explaining that 2-dimensional shapes are in our everyday lives and that we will look at a picture and identify different shapes within the picture. 3. Using the smart board, a picture that includes 2-dimensional shapes will be shown. a. Making sure that students raise their hands, ask the students to locate different shapes throughout the picture. b. Asking questions such as: i. Where is the square located? ii. Are there any circles in the picture that we see? 4. We will then write out the different positional phrases that were used to describe the pictures. a. Ex. above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to 5. I will then ask four students to come up to the front of the class and stand in a row. a. I will then place them in a way where the other students will have to identify where they are located in comparison to the other students. b. In order to get all the students involved, I will have three different groups come up to the front and as a class we will identify their positions. 6. When finished going over the positional phrases, I will show the students an example of what we will be doing during our next activity. a. Show them the example of the scarecrow. When finished, put the scarecrow away so students can not duplicate it. b. Explain that they will go to their desks and wait patiently for the teacher to call out where each shape should be glued using positional phrases. c. Remind the students not to use too much glue or their work will stick to their classmates work.

7. Dismiss the students to their desks. 8. Once students are in their seats quietly, tell the students to: a. Have students write their names on the back of their papers. b. Find the biggest circle and glue it onto their paper to form the head. c. Then, glue the triangle in the middle of the circle to form the nose. d. After, glue the 5 small squares below the triangle to form the mouth. e. Glue the two small circles above the triangle to form eyes. f. Glue the skinny rectangles on top of the big circle to create hair. g. Glue the biggest rectangle on top of the skinny rectangles to create a hat. h. Glue the biggest triangle on top of the big rectangle. 9. When students have completed their scarecrows, they will be handed in to me in order to look at them and assess how well the students did. Activity Analysis: Use pictures to identify 2-dimensional shapes and their positionsstudents will be able to look at a picture created by the teacher and find 2-dimensional shapes and explain where they are located using positional phrases that they may know. If they use a positional phrase, it will be written down and explained. The students enjoy having the smart board in their activities; therefore I will use the smart board to display the pictures that the students will use to find 2-dimensional shapes. Creating a scarecrow using 2-dimensional shapes and positional wordsstudents will be given many different 2-dimensional shapes. They will listen to the teacher for instructions on where they should place the shapes based on the positional phrase. The students enjoy being able to work with glue and colorful paper, so they will appreciate being able to be artful and creating a scarecrow. I will not use technology for this activity because I want the students to be able to identify the different shapes and be able to place them based on their knowledge. References: n/a
