Part 1: NETS-S and Common Core Scenario

Grade/Subject NETS-S Standard 2nd Grade English Language Arts Standard 1: Creativity and Innovation Performance Indicator: c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues 2.RIT.7 Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text

Common Core Standard Lesson Scenario As a class we will read the book, I Can Read About Weather, by Robyn Supraner. This will continue to help students with reading and vocabulary as it also introduces students to the concept of reading to gain information. It will also reinforce a portion of what is expected of 2nd grade students to learn in science. Students will learn about various weather patterns and cloud formations. They will also be introduced to new vocabulary words dealing with weather, the water cycle, clouds, and meteorology. The instructor will pause to show the illustrations in the text to the class. The instructor will also go into further detail to explain how each weather process happens in the pictures. This will teach students how to identify various cloud formations and how to recognize differences between such precipitation as sleet and hail. It will also help students learn how to identify severe weather. This will teach students how to tie the text to the illustrations in order to create a greater understanding of the subject matter. Then, as a class we will access the website http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weatherforecasting.htm and look up the Weather Words section. This will reinforce the vocabulary words that students learned from the book, as well as introduce them to new words such as meteorological tools. From there, the class will access the interactive website http://www.phschool.com/atschool/phsciexp/active_art/weather_fronts/ in order to gain a greater understanding of changing weather patterns. The simulation will allow students to view weather changes in a more realistic way than just pictures. It will allow them to witness how a new weather front moves into an area and the effect it has.

Part 2: NETS-S and Essential Standard Scenario

Grade/Subject NETS-S Standard Essential Standard 2nd Grade Science Standard 3. Research and Information Fluency Performance Indicator: d. Process data and report results 2.E.1 Understand patterns of weather and factors that affect weather 2.E.1.3 Compare weather patterns that occur over time and relate observable patterns to time of day and time of year.

Lesson Scenario As a class we will read the book, I Can Read About Weather, by Robyn Supraner, as a way to introduce students to the different aspects of weather. The instructor will pause to reflect on each different weather formation and aspect of meteorology presented in the book.

Students will learn that the sun is Earths source of heat. Students will learn about the water cycle and how the sun is an integral part of that. Students will learn about cloud formations and how they can indicate the weather for that day. Students will also learn about different types of precipitation. They will use the illustrations in the text to help identify clouds and distinguish between types of precipitation such as sleet and hailstones. Students will be able to recognize what various types of severe weather looks like. Finally, students will be able to name the job of a meteorologist and be able to list several tools that meteorologists use to measure weather. After reading the book the class will have a discussion about how the weather changes throughout the day and throughout the season. The instructor will introduce the idea of patterns. The instructor will ask such questions as: What happens to the temperature as the sun rises? What happens to the temperature after the sun sets? When is it the warmest throughout the day? Which season is the hottest? Which season is the coldest? Why do you think it starts to get warmer in spring and cooler in autumn? In order to apply this knowledge, the class will observe and record the actual weather and outdoor temperature (using an outdoor thermometer). Then, the class will access the website http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=34.70833206,77.44277954 to record and compare the results of the forecasted weather and temperature to what the day was really like. Also, the class will use the website archives to observe and record the temperature starting with the present day and going back the same day of every month in the preceding year. This will help reinforce the idea of changing temperatures throughout the day and seasons, as well as seeing various meteorological tools at work. Based on all the data, students will then work in groups to make a prediction for the following days weather and temperature. The next day, they will briefly present their predictions and see how accurate they were.

REMINDER Your scenario will show how you would implement activities to ensure all students met the performance indicator for the technology standard (NETS-S) and the subject area standard (Common Core and Essential Standards). The technology component used in the lesson should be from the student. Remember that technology must be a component since this is a technology standard!
