Social Studies - 2nd grade Number of students: 25 Social Studies Alive My Community Standards:

Fri. 10/4 * 2:50-3:20pm

2 H2.0.1 Demonstrate chronological thinking by distinguishing among years and decades using a timeline of local community events. 2 H2.0.3 Use an example to describe the role of the individual in creating history CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1a Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., gaining the floor in respectful ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1b Build on others talk in conversations by linking their comments to the remarks of others.

Learning Goal: Students will be able to participate in classroom discussion and share excitement in family history. Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to: determine that history is something that has happened in the past discuss with parents/family members about the past share a piece of history with the class

Materials: Social Studies Alive BIG BOOK, chart paper, personal example Anticipatory Set: 1. Introduce lesson focus. Today we will be reading about a community that is very old Explain that some buildings in the community are over 150 years old! 2. Create a number line/time line. Label it from 1-10. 3. Choose a student to mark his/her age on the line. 4. Extend the line further and mark your own age. 5. Continue adding lengths till it is 150. 6. Inform students that 150 years ago was long before they were born. No one alive today was living 150 years ago Instructional Input: 1. Prompt students by asking them what they know about their communitys history. 2. Introduce that the word HISTORY is what happened in the past. 3. Record student responses on the board.

4. Begin reading pages 8-11. Guided Practice: 1. Discuss how some things from the Andersons home told about the history, letters etc. 2. Instruct your students to go home and talk to their parents or grandparents about something they could share about history. A picture, a story, etc. 3. (Blog to parents and send note home regarding activity) 4. Ask students to be prepared to share something with the class next Wednesday (they can bring things in early for you to hold onto) Independent Practice: 1. Explain: Parent letter and inform students that they will discuss history with parents/grandparents and prepare something to share next Wednesday, either something to show us and/or tell us. Closure: Share personal family history (shadow box containing great grandfathers and grandmothers pocket watch, great grandmothers thimble made in the town I was born in, harmonica and history letter explaining the significance of each item.) Domains:

Cognitive- acknowledging that history is from past events Affective- Communication with family members, personal meaning Psychomotor- Transitions

Multiple Intelligences:

Visual Spatial Photos in text, personal example Interpersonal- Opportunities for peer and whole group discussion, opportunities to share work with others. Logical/Mathematical- Compiling list of historical events, making timeline

Differentiation:

Allow student to bring Student Edition to the carpet. Use BIG book to read from
