Olding Eng 200 1, November 2013 Rhetorical Analysis For my rhetorical analysis, I have chosen to write about the two music artists, Queen and Bruce Springsteen. Both of these music artists have come a long way throughout their careers and have had numerous achievements along the way as well. While I take a look within each of their songs, I can see how they are both similar and different even though they perform two completely different styles of music. Queen and Bruce Springsteen both present a few great examples of ethos pathos and logos throughout their songs, which deal with credibility, emotion, and logic. Queen was a unique band who often performed like a Glam Rock band during their prime. They had numerous styles of songs and generally put together a rock presence on stage while they performed in front of huge crowds. A famous music artist who had a big influence on them in the early stages was Led Zeppelin (Olding 10/21/13). After seeing what type of music Zeppelin implemented, Queen put together a similar sound with the guitar that helped them create some of their greatest songs (Olding 10/21/13). Another artist that had a big influence on them was David Bowie (Olding 10/21/13). Queen was confident in their abilities while performing and it was very noticeable during all of their performances (Olding 10/21/13). They embodied Freddy Mercurys personality in spontaneous and odd ways, which also helped get them to where they have come after all these years (Olding 10/21/13). Queen has received numerous Grammy Awards throughout the years for their talent, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 (Queenonline.com).

Zambelli 2 Bruce Springsteen on the other hand brought a whole different style of music to the stage. Bruce created music that was upbeat and classified as Rock music. He did a lot of work with the E Street Band during his beginning stages and has carried the nickname, The Boss with him throughout his entire career for his tradition and accomplishments (brucespringsteen.net). I have always been a big fan of Bruce Springsteen simply because of his childhood story and how he made it big by chasing his dream. At the age of seven, Bruce was influenced by Elvis Presley after seeing him on a television show, and from there on out, he practiced playing his guitar routinely in hopes to make it big one day (brucespringsteen.net). He had a rough time in middle school and high school by being known as the loner because teachers would say he was always in the corner playing his guitar unsociably (brucespringsteen.net). In 1973, Bruce Springsteen debuted his first album after being signed by Columbia Records with help of John Hammond who signed Bob Dylan a decade earlier with this record company (brucespringsteen.net). Bruce Springsteen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 as well and has received 20 Grammy Awards, along with 2 Golden Globes and an Academy Award (brucespringsteen.net). The first song I am taking a look at is We Are The Champions by Queen. This song has been a top hit for decades and is known as one of the top five songs Queen has ever performed. Regarding ethos, pathos, and logos, Queen does a great job implementing each one of these throughout this song. For ethos, it is very easy to give credibility to Queen. This song belongs to them because they were the ones who wrote it. With credibility comes authority. Since they were the creators, they have complete authority over everyone with this particular song. Dealing with pathos, I easily see an

Zambelli 3 emotional side throughout the song. This song comes across in a positive tone talking about the champion aspect. The instrumentation that the band uses during this song adds to the emotion as well with it gradually getting louder during the chorus that talks about being champions and paying their dues that got them to that point (AZlyrics.com). The structure of this song describes the logos aspect of it regarding logical appeals. The way this song is sung, the lyrics are used in an order to describe how they got to the point of being champions. The song presentation shows this while it is being performed and is unique because it tells a story falling into place every time I listen to it. Bruce Springsteen called his song that I am writing about, Marys Place. This song came from one of my favorite albums that he ever wrote which was named The Rising. Regarding ethos, pathos, and logos, Bruce does a great job as well of implementing each one of these throughout his piece. For ethos, it is easy to give credibility to Bruce Springsteen. He was the creator of this song and wrote it himself. Along with this, knowing how Bruce was the creator of this song, all of the authority is given to him as well concerning the ethos aspect. Regarding pathos, this song gives an emotional appeal to those who listen to it with the switch in tones it uses. When the song starts out, Bruce Springsteen sings in a voice that is soft and quiet, which later rises throughout the song when the chorus picks up. The instrumentation also adds to the emotional appeal throughout the song as well. To start out, the instruments that are played are those that carry a soft sound and when the song picks up to occur louder, the drums, guitar, piano, and saxophone chime in to give it a louder emotional appeal. This song displays a logos aspect as well dealing with logical appeals. This song carries a structure talking about a party that will occur at Marys place. The lyrics that are used

Zambelli 4 are in an order that build up from start to finish. Bruce Springsteen is claiming that Marys place is the place he wants to be because its going to be a party with familiar faces that will be around him (AZlyrics.com). These are just a few ways how ethos, pathos, and logos are displayed throughout this song, which makes it easy for myself to conclude how both of the songs that I have talked about are similar in their own ways. As I analyzed the two of these songs, there are a few ways how I see them being similar to one another. Queen and Bruce Springsteen both demonstrate great examples of pathos ethos and logos throughout their songs that I have talked about and a few of the examples are very similar to one another. Queen and Bruce Springsteen display an aspect of ethos having to do with credibility. Queen and Bruce Springsteen personally wrote each of their songs that I have talked about. This gives them complete authority for these songs. With regarding pathos, each artist displays a positive emotion from start to finish in his or her song. Both songs use instruments and vocals to add to the emotion, which is displayed in a positive manner as well as adding to the emotion being expressed throughout each song. With talking about logos, each song has a structure. Both songs are structured to convey a message and each artist has a claim. For Queen, their claim is them explaining about being Champions, and for Bruce, his claim is how he wants to go to an event happening at Marys Place. Regarding ethos pathos and logos, each artist conveys examples that turn out to be closely similar to one another. As I can see these artists being similar to one another, I also see them being different as well. The type of music that each artist conveys isnt the same. I see Queen being more of a punk rock band while I see Bruce Springsteen being more of a rock and roll artist. The topics that are talked about in each of their songs are different as well.

Zambelli 5 Queen talks about being champions, while Bruce Springsteen talks about attending a party at a friends place. Even though these artists have similar traits in their music, it is easy to find differences throughout their songs as well. The two of these bands make music that are completely different styles, which makes it amazing to see as you compare and contrast them seeing how similar they can be as well as being different. I chose to write about two music artists that I enjoy listening to because I thought it would be awesome comparing the two, while contrasting them as well. Knowing that they display two completely different styles of music, it was interesting for me to analyze both, while seeing the similarities and differences between the two. Both artists have had a tremendous career with their achievements and still continue to today. Queen and Bruce Springsteen displayed great examples of ethos pathos and logos throughout their songs and made it easy for me to examine them while taking a look at the messages they were conveying.
