The Impact of Rap and Hip-Hop Music On American Youth. Retrieved from http://teenink.com/nonfiction/all/article/303133/The-Impact-of-Rap-and-HipHop-Music-On-American-Youth/ This website was extremely beneficial to my research. This information shows just as the title states, the impact that hip hop and rap have had on the youth in todays world. The negative to the research though is that it is incredibly one sided. This website only lists negative impacts it lists no positives. But it aids my paper because it shows the negative light that some people still hold over the rap and hip hop genre. Blanchard, B. (1999, July 26). The Social Significance of Rap & Hip-Hop Culture. Edge. Retrieved from http://www.stanford.edu/class/e297c/poverty_prejudice/mediarace/socialsignificance.htm
This article by Ms. Blanchard is the best piece of research I have found on my topic. It dives deep into the issues that rap has been through throughout its history. Unlike most other articles that have a negative opinion of rap, this article shows the positive side of it, as well as its positive impact on society. This article goes into incredible detail of the actual rappers as well, which is very helpful for my topic. The only negative about this piece is that it is not up to date. Which means one of the most controversial and popular artists, Eminem, is not mentioned in this article.

Hoover, E. (2012, March 7). The U. of Rochesters Recruitment Rap. The Chronicle of Higher Education. Retrieved from http://chronicle.com.lib.ottawa.edu/blogs/headcount/the-u-ofrochesters-recruitment-rap-3/29734 This is an article that discusses the video that the University of Rochester made for recruiting. The video they made is a rap about the school. It also includes a link to the video which is amazing to my research because it shows that rap is listened to by collegiate people as well, not just the thugs and gangsters that some people think listen to it. McCoy, J. Rap Music in the 1980s. Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1992 This article is extremely beneficial to the impact that rap had on the culture during the 80s. I just wish that it was on a bigger stretch of time, not just the 80s. It is helpful though as it mentions everything worth having during this decade for my topic.

Mills, F (2001, December). RAP AND YOUNG, WHITE MALES: MASCULINITY, MASKING, AND DENIAL. Retrieved from http://www.americanpopularculture.com/archive/music/rap_white_men.htm This article is incredibly helpful to my paper because it shows the growth of rap to include more Caucasians. It shows a very negative opinion of the impact that rap has had, but the point that this article makes and shows in a way that in unintended by the author is the incredible growth in the popularity in rap as well as in the wide spread in types of people who listen to it. Parker-Pope, T. (2008, February 5). Under the Influence ofMusic? New York Times. Retrieved from http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02/05/under-the-influence-ofmusic/?_r=0 This article shines a very negative light on the rap genre and is perfect for my paper. It is extremely one sided, but it is the common view of people who do not listen to this type of music. This article helps my paper because it shows the popular viewpoint. It is also helpful, because it is easy to counter with all of the positive and motivating lyrics that are in rap, that this article doesnt mention at all. Rhodes, H. (2013). The Evolution of Rap Music in the United States. Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute. Retrieved from http://www.yale.edu/ynhti/curriculum/units/1993/4/93.04.04.x.html This article has the most information that is relevant and helpful to my topic. This article shows the change and growth in rap, from street corners, to multimillion dollar studios. This article doesnt show an opinion positively or negatively towards rap as it only lists facts and information. That is incredibly helpful for my paper as it leaves plenty of room for more information. Wood, J. (2004 April) Rap Music. Retrieved from http://novaonline.nvcc.edu/eli/evans/his135/Events/Rap79/RapMusic.html The biggest and most helpful piece of information on this website, is the timeline. The time line lists the most major events that happened during that time. The information is vague but it definitely aids research. Wood, P. (2011, January 12). The New Huck Finn vs. Yales Big Book of Rap Lyrics. The Chronicle of Higher Education. Retrieved from http://chronicle.com.lib.ottawa.edu/blogs/innovations/the-new-huck-finn-vs-yales-big-book-ofrap-lyrics/28379 This piece dives into not only one controversial piece in history, but two. There was a new Huckleberry Finn movie where all of the N words were replaced and the controversy of that. It also brings up Yale Universitys big book of rap lyrics, which is collection of negative lyrics made throughout the history of rap. The book however doesnt list the positive lyrics, which is a key point that this article makes. This article is helpful because like other sources it

shows the negative bias that some people have on rap music. The article also aids by listing positives that rap has had on the culture. Unknown (2002). The History Of Rap: Vol. 1: The Genesis. Hip-Hop Journal. Retrieved from http://www.hiphop-network.com/articles/general/kurtisblowversionofhiphop.asp This article is very helpful and detailed about the beginning of rap music. It mentions how rap started and includes the first rappers as well as the publics opinion of them. It also mentions how in the beginning most of the lyics were positive and motivational. This aids my project because it shows the history and how rap all started.
