Laura Anderson C & I 449, Professor Chris Bohne Final Project, Book Order Need Statement: I am currently not

a working librarian. I chose this project because I felt it would be good to have some experience choosing books to add to a library collection. I was interested in using a budget, comparing vendors, their prices, and the entire book ordering process. Objective: What I hope to accomplish with my project is a better understanding about the cost of books, vendor differences, gain a clearer idea of what is in the middle school library collection at my school, and resources available to aid the selection process. The Project: When I first started this project I did not realize what a daunting task I had undertaken. It took a lot of time and research. First, I looked at the curriculum map I created. I carefully looked at each discipline and what was taught throughout the year. Secondly, I searched the middle school library catalog for books on all subjects and identified holes in the collection and areas that could use some updating. I also ascertained which parts of the curriculum were well represented in the library collection and do not need additions or updating at this time. My third step was to look up possible books using The Childrens Literature Comprehensive Database and Novelist to access reviews on the materials I was considering purchasing. Fourth, I compared prices for the books between two vendors, Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Amazon seemed to have a better selection and did not charge for shipping. Therefore, I chose to use Amazon as my vendor for this project. Through my research I discovered that the library collection has an extensive amount of resources for the Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies portions of the curriculum. I did not add any titles for the Math segment of the curriculum. The library catalog has numerous Math resources. For Language Arts, there were a few non-fiction titles I felt would be great additions to the collection as well as some poetry books, and writer handbooks. For Life Science, I was able to locate more current titles on all of the human body systems along with plants, bacteria, viruses, and animals. Lastly, I looked at the Family and Consumer Sciences segment of the curriculum. I included a few newer Sewing and Food titles. I did not feel the library collection had enough titles regarding Internet safety and cyber bullying and added some resources. I also found some interesting books on Robotics. Lastly, I added some titles on green careers to the collection. Self-Evaluation: First and foremost I was amazed at how quickly one thousand dollars can disappear! I feel my project did meet my objectives. I have gained a much better idea of the types of resources already available in my middle school library. I was able to look compare/contrast two book vendors. I have a better understanding of the cost of books, especially those with library bindings. I definitely feel more comfortable using reviews to help guide my purchase decisions.

Although, at times it was interesting to see how multiple reviews on the same book could differ. I had to learn to read each review carefully and weigh what was said. What still needs to be done is for me to look at more vendors besides Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I would talk to other librarians regarding what vendors they use and why. I would try to ascertain why the other librarians bought paperback for some areas of the collection versus hardcover or library binding. If I was the librarian, I would create a curriculum map for each grade in my building and update my collection as time and money allowed. Most importantly, I would have continual conversations with every team at each grade level and students looking for suggestions or new items they want to see in the library and keep up on my professional reading.
