There are many early childhood education programs and practices in India. India has a population o 1.1! "illion people. #ut o that population !$%&0$000 are children under the age o eight years old. #ut o those num"er '0( o children &-' years old do not get a chance to go to pre-school. )uch o early care and education o a child is in ormal. The children are cared or "y grandmothers and relati*es. The care includes stories$ lulla"ies and traditional games. In India they "elie*e that the irst si+ years o a child,s li e are critical or laying do-n a solid oundation or their li e long learning and de*elopment. In India they care mainly on cogniti*e$ language$ social$ physical$ and emotional de*elopment or early childhood education. .AP /.e*elopmentally Appropriate Practices0 are *ery important in India. Research pro*es that children places in .AP classrooms are more socially mature$ less stressed and more creati*e. In India there are t-o main practices. They are Play 1ay and Tal2 and Chal2. Play 1ay is a play "ased curriculum. They "elie*e in the 1aldor Education 3ystem. That a child should "e and act li2e a child. It ocuses on a child as a -hole. The curriculum mainly ocuses on story telling$ puppetry$ artistic acti*ities and imaginati*e play. They encourage ree play. They also "elie*e in the )ontessori )ethod or Play 1ay. In a )ontessori classroom in India$ children learn "y playing hands on. Children can mo*e reely around the room and

choose their o-n acti*ities. The classrooms are e4uipped -ith slid-si5ed and mo*a"le urniture. The classrooms is designed to help children learn -ith all there senses. The second practice is Tal2 and Chal2. The Tal2 and Chal2 curriculum do not "elie*e in ree play or the children. The day is illed -ith teacher directed acti*ities only. Reading and -riting are strongly stressed. Each su"6ect is e4ually times. 7orty i*e minutes or -riting$ orty i*e minutes or language$ and so on. 3ome early childhood education programs in India are pri*ately o-ned. There are Pre- Primary programs -hich are children o &-! years old. India has 8ead 3tart programs. They also ha*e pu"lic programs ran "y the go*ernment. I couldn,t ind the percentage i three and our years old participating. The per pupil spending or each child is between $1.80 and $17, depending on the early childhood program. The teacher/student ratios for early childhood education classrooms are 1/5. arly childhood education teachers ha!e to ha!e these "ualifications, e#cellent oral and written communication s$ills, post graduate degree in %hild &e!elopment, at least '(5 years in )*+, clear understanding of the de!elopment issues affecting children under the age of si# year old and the issues of child protection, e#cellent facilitation and training s$ills, e#perience in representational roles at %%& forums at national and regional le!els, e#cellent computer s$ills, spea$s, reads and writes nglish fluently, read and write in ,indi, comfortable wor$ing as a member of a culturally di!erse team, and ability to perform multiple tas$s. -ndia.s early childhood education as a whole, is wor$ing good but it can always be impro!ed.
