Tyra Isom WRT 1010 Section 22 26 November 2013 Readers Response The Box Man #1 In The Box Man

by Barbara Lazear Ascher, the lives of two lonesome women are compared, and though they are lonely it is not by choice. Ascher describes the first woman whose daily ritual consists of getting soup at the local coffee shop every evening at five-thirty. The woman painstakingly broke every cracker in half until nothing is left. Without fail at 6 oclock she paid her check and left. Soon the clock would strike 6 oclock. As a retired woman she often pondered what possibilities lay ahead of her. The sound of the blaring television across the way at 3 am in the morning lets one know that the second woman was awake. The feeding of her pets and plants each day gave her a purpose. Lastly, theres The Box Man, who has chosen seclusion and the companionship of self, taking great care in avoiding others. Ascher seems to have written this essay to tell others your never alone when feeling lonesome. My personal response to this essay is that the short story is a good example of what some homeless people go through every day. What the ups and down are, what it takes to be homeless and that its not chosen. That is why I do everything I can to help someone in need. Some dont want any help but it doesnt hurt to lend a helping hand. The authors writing helped visualize images such as the placement and arrangement of objects, the focus, and the uses of color, light, and shadow. For example, the author writes as darkness fell, describing that its getting dark out. This short essay is a very descriptive essay that describes details and gives examples. Ascher uses examples that were developed from observations and suggestive observations. The strategy was very effective because it described

and showed readers images of what homeless go through. So overall the short essay was a life lesson, that you can find solace within ourselves.
