HEREDITY

The nucleus of a cell can be called its control center. This is because it contains small, threadlike structures called chromosomes. Chromosomes carry information that controls the cells activities & reproduction. Chromosomes are important to heredity which is the passing of characteristics from parents to offspring. Each chromosome is made up of smaller sections called genes. Genes carry information that controls the characteristics of an organism. Each kind of organism has its own kind of genes. We know that Gregor Mendels heredity factors were genes. Offspring inherits one gene from each trait from each parent. The genes responsible for dominant traits are called dominant genes. The genes responsible for recessive traits are called recessive genes. A dominant gene can prevent a recessive gene from being expressed as a trait. If an offspring inherits one dominant trait, it will appear.

Heredity is the transmission of hereditary traits from parents to offspring Hereditary Traits composed of physical & mental traits

Chromosomes are found inside the nucleus. They are the hereditary carriers. Genes are formed inside the chromosomes. They are the final hereditary carriers. 46 mans number of chromosomes XX female sex chromosomes xy male sex chromosomes Dominant Gene trait/gene that appear Ex: TW Recessive Gene trait/gene that is hidden Ex. tw Purebred composed of 2 dominant genes or 2 recessive genes Ex. TT, tt Hybrid composed of 1 dominant gene & 1 recessive gene Ex. Tt, Ww
