CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.3 Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For

example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + x) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3x; apply the distributive property to the expression 24x + 18y to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4x + 3y); apply properties of operations to y + y + y to produce the equivalent expression 3y.

Objective-Given an equation with variables and

numbers, students will be able to use the distributive property to calculate an equivalent expression.

A variable is a letter or symbol for a number that we do not know the value of yet (Mathisfun). A variable can also be known as a constant. Examples are
k, x, or y

Recall the distributive property of numbers. We will now apply this to variables. For more help/practice Watch the video below! go to:

Operation w/variables

Equivalent to:

When you have 3+3+3=?

You will get 3(3) or 9

y+y y+y+y y+y+y+ y 2y-y

2y 3y 4y 1y or y

So, take x+x+x=?

You will get 3(x) or 3x

* Remember variables ARE numbers that we just do not know the value of, so we can treat variables as numbers. Apply the same properties!

Now lets take all that we have learned. To produce equivalent expressions we can:
use the distributive property
2(4+x) 8+2x Lets check! Substitute 1 for x In both expressions we get 10 y+y+y+y 4y Lets check! Substitute 2 for y We get 8 in both expressions

use properties of operation

Since we can substitute numbers for variables and get equivalent answers, we can say the equations are equivalent.
