- Identify topics- teaching procedural skills - Specify learning Objectives: 2 long range objectivesteaching skills- Automaticity: ability to perform a skill essentially without thinking about it. Transfer: applying knowledge acquired in one context - Prepare Examples and Problems: examples are essential for helping students initially understand the skill, and problems are what students need for practice to develop automaticity and promote transfer.

- Phase 1: Introduction and Review- the teacher introduces the lesson and reviews prior understanding. - Phase 2: Presentation- the new skill is presented, explained, and illustrated with high-quality examples - Phase 3: Guided PracticeStudents practice the skill under the teachers guidance - Phase 4: Students practice the skill on their own - Critical thinking is an important component of Direct Instruction.

-Straightforward assessment: students are given problems to solve on their own. -Make sure wording of problem is not simplistic, students will often demonstrate that they are just regurgitating the information rather than showing that they understand the material they have covered. -Use your judgment in creating assessments that have the greatest likelihood of accurately measuring your students understanding.

- The model provides many opportunities to increase student motivation, and this increased motivation can result in improved learning when the model is being used, as well as improve attitudes about learning in general. - Factors that increase students motivation to learn: - helping students be successful in learning activities - Creating a sense of challenge in students - Using personalized and concrete examples -Involving students in learning activities

So what? What is important to understand about this?

You have to have clearly identified topics with two long range objectives in mind. Students need to learn the ability to perform a skill or task without thinking about it and they must be apply to apply knowledge acquired in one context to another. Examples that are appropriate and clear help students understand the skill and problems help them to practice and develop the skills of automaticity and transfer. A good way of assessing the students is by giving them problems to solve on their own, without making the wording too simplistic. Helping students to be successful, and involving them in learning activities helps motivate them to learn what you have to teach them
