Wal-Mart vs. Outtakes

Depending on where I shopped my experiences were very different. For my full service grocery store I chose Wal-Mart. I enjoyed my shopping trips there. With the amount of food I was able to buy I felt as if it was sufficient enough to last a family for a month. With the list of food I developed, I decided that I could make one trip a month to Wal-Mart and have everything I needed with extra money to spare. I looked mostly for foods that were in large quantities and had a cheap price. The majority of the time I looked for and purchased store brand items. When I went shopping at Outtakes it went a little differently. Not only could I not purchase as much food as I could at Wal-Mart, but almost every item I bought in Outtakes had a similar version at Wal-Mart for a cheaper price. A half-gallon of milk at Outtakes is $3.89 whereas a gallon at Wal-Mart is $3.43. On almost every item at Outtakes, the prices were significantly higher. Being that Outtakes is closer it may be a more convenient option, but if you are looking to buy more food and save more money Wal-Mart is a better option. The most noticeable social determinant of health I can think of is unemployment. People who greatly rely on the SNAP program normally try to get as much food as possible while trying to spend as little money as possible. A majority of the time that includes buying store brand items, which are not offered in Outtakes. Wal-Mart also has a wide variety of sales on food items that are not necessarily offered at Outtakes either. On the other hand, unemployment typically leads to lack of transportation; as people who are not employed do not usually have a vehicle or gas money to drive to Wal-Mart. Having said that, having a convenient store like Outtakes may be more convenient and easier on transportation for some and could limit people to shopping there. This social determinant of health denies a persons access to lower prices, and

eventually ends up costing a person food. Even though a person may save on transportation costs, it will still end up costing them money. These two tie together so closely because one can affect the other in a unique way where it limits the place at which a person may do their shopping.
