Final Essay for In the Time of the Butterflies

In this essay, examine the novel as a bildungsroman where we see the emotional, ethical, moral development of a central character that is used to teach an important theme. You will essentially be writing a character analysis in which you explain how this character is either static or dynamic and flat or round; clearly explain what aspects of the character changes or grows and what this shows about the characters full personality. As you discuss analyze this characters growth, be sure to keep it in th e context of what we learn from this characters experiences. As we have discussed the novel, there are some common themes we have seen. You may consider what theme / lesson we learn about sacrifice, political control / injustice, loyalty, identity / selfdiscovery, courage to enact change, etc. In your analysis of this character and the use of that character to teach a certain theme, you must use specific textual evidence from the novel and also incorporate a song you think exemplifies the character. Lines from the song (just like a poem) should be used to support the points you make about the characters growth and / or contribution to the theme. As you begin working on this assignment, follow these steps to help you organize your thoughts and meet all requirements: 1. Choose a character. 2. Brainstorm ideas about that characters growth what aspects can you use to organize your analysis? 3. Decide what theme / lesson this characters growth helps us learn. 4. Begin planning create a basic outline / graphic organizer where you layout your thesis statement, your key points, examples you will use to support each key point, ideas for the conclusion and so what question. 5. Find a song for your character then go back to your outline / graphic organizer & begin incorporating lines / lyrics that support the points you make. 6. Draft the essay. Go ahead and set the proper formatting Times New Roman, 12 pt font, doublespaced. Include a header with an abbreviated title, your name, and page number. 7. Revise the essay look carefully at your introduction does it have all the necessary components? Look carefully at each paragraph are the points clearly stated & sufficiently supported? Do they support your overall thesis? 8. Revise again; be sure your Works Cited list is correct and attach a copy of the lyrics as an appendix. 9. Edit the essay, looking carefully at punctuation, verb tense, proper MLA format for quotes and citations, sentence structure watch for those run-ons & fragments, spelling, etc. 10. Create note cards to guide your presentation and a brief PowerPoint, Prezi, or other objects to use as a visual aide. Then PRACTICE your presentation. 11. When you submit your final essay, you should include a title page, your outline / graphic organizer, essay, works cited, appendix with lyrics in that order.
