Thestructuralconceptsandexistingconditionsreportfor300NorthLaSalle
examinesanddescribesthestructuralsystemaswellasdesignandloadingconditions.
This60storyofficehighrisebuildingsstructureisaconcretebearingwallcorewithsteel
outriggercolumns.Thefloorsystemiscomprisedofconcreteslabovercomposite
deckingsupportedbysteelWshapebeams.Thelateralloadsforthebuildingarecarried
bytheconcretecorewhichalsoactsasashearwallcore.Abeltoftrussesislocated
betweenthe41stand43rdfloorsandisusedtoreducelateraldeflection.
DesignwindandseismiclateralforcesaredeterminedusingASCE705.A
comparisonofthebaseshearandoverturningmomentsprovidesthatwindintheNorth
Southdirectionisthegoverninglateralload.Thisbaseshearis6748.2kips,andthe
overturningmomentis2,846,000ftK.Theseloadsaretransferredfromtheshearwall
coreintothedeepfoundationconsistingofdrilledconcretepiersanddrivensteelHpiles.
ThedistributionoftheselateralloadswillbefurtherinvestigatedinTechnicalReport3.
Spotcheckswereperformedonatypicalcompositedeck,beam,andcolumn.These
spotcheckswerebasedsolelyongravityloadsandconfirmedthestrengthandsizeofthe
members.However,thesewillhavetobeanalyzedagainlaterexaminingthestrengthof
thesemembersunderlateralandgravityloads.

Introduction
300NorthLaSalleisa60storyhighriseofficebuildinglocatedonthenorthbankof
theChicagoRiverinChicagoIllinois.Itoffers25,000gsfofrentable,columnfreefloor
spaceperlevel,withatotalsquarefootageof1.3million.Constructiononthebuilding
beganin2006andwascompletedinFebruaryof2009atacostof$230million.Itis
ownedandmanagedbyHinesdevelopersandwasdesignedbyPickardChiltonArchitects.
TheprimarytenantisKirkland&Ellis,Chicagoslargestlawfirm,occupyingbetween24
and28floors.
300NorthLaSalleriseselegantlyabovetheChicagoRiverwithasubtlesetback
abovethe42ndfloor.Itsfinlikesteeloutriggersandaluminummullionsemphasize
verticality.Theappearanceofstructuralmembersonthefaadeaswellasthelargeopen
floorplansalludetoMiesvanderRoheandtheinternationalstylehehelpedmakefamous
inChicago.
AmajorfocusofthebuildingwastobesustainableachievingaprecertifiedLEED
Goldrating.300NorthLaSalleutilizeshighperformanceglassthroughitsentirefaade
aswellashavingagreenroof.Anothercoredesignaspectforsustainabilityisits
utilizationofwaterfromtherivertoremoveheatfromitschillersandthereforeremoves
theneedforcoolingtowersandsavesenergy.TheMEPengineeringfirmAlvineand
Associatesdesignedthebuildingtobeapproximately20%undertheenergycode.
Someotherkeyfeaturesareitspubliclyaccessiblespaces.Keepingwiththetrendof
revitalizingtheriver,300NorthLaSalleoffersdirectaccesstotheriversedgefroma
largewaterfrontgardenandcaf.Onits1stlevelitalsoboastsarestaurant,smallbank,
andsundryshops.
ThestructuralengineersforthedesignwereMagnussenKlemencicAssociates.The
superstructureiscomposedofabearingconcretecoreandexteriorsteelWshape
outriggercolumns.Thetypicalfloorsystemconsistsof312concreteslabson3
compositedeckingsupportedbysteelWshapebeams&girders.Thebearingconcrete
corewallalsoactsasashearwallcoretocarrylateralforcestothefoundation.Thereisa
beltoftrussesspanningfromthe41stto43rdfloorswhichaideincontrollinglateral
deflectionofthestructureandrotationwithintheshearwallcore.Theconcretestrength
ofthecorevariesbetween6,000and10,000psiandthewallthicknessesvarybetween

Thebuildingwasbuiltonthesiteofa1950sparkinggaragewhosefoundation
includedconcretepiersandtimberpiles.Inadditiontotheparkinggaragethereisalsoan
abandonedtunnelbelowthesiteatapproximately40belowgrade.Todealwiththese
existingsituationsthestructuralengineersdecidedtocuttheexistingfoundationfromthe
parkinggarageaminimumof40belowthebottomofthefoundationslabanywherethat
itwasconflictingwiththenewconstruction.Anytimberpilesthatwereinconflictwere
removedandtheirholesfilledwithgrout.Theyalsorequiredthatthetunnelbefilledin
withgroutofsufficientstrengthtomeetrequirementsofthegoverningauthority.For
thedesignedHpilesthatwouldfallabovethetunnel,theyrequiredthattheholesbe
predrilledthroughthetunnelbeforethepilesweredriven.

compositedecking.Whiletheslabvariesfrom3lightweightconcrete,ontheoffice
floors,toasthickas8normalweightconcreteinthemechanicalarea,thedeckisa
consistent3TypeWminimum20gagegalvanizedsteel.Thecompositedecking
transfersitsloadsonto50ksisteelWideflangebeamstypicallyspanningbetween429
and436.BelowtheelevatorpitsandComEdroomsonLowerLevels14theslab
changestoa2wayflatslabbetween12and14deep.Thethickenedtwowayflatslabis
usedtomorereadilycarrythelargeliveloadsintheseareastothecore.Theroofsystem
isalsoalightweightconcreteslabon3decking,howeverthebeamsizeisincreasedto
carrytheadditionalweightfromthegreenroofaroundthecoreofthebuilding.
LateralSystem:
Windandseismicforcesareresistedbyaconcreteshearwallcore,strengthenedby
aseriesoftrussescreatingabeltbetweenthe41stand43rdfloors.Theshearwallcoreis
castinplaceconcreteof6,000;8,000;and10,000psistrengthdependingonlocation.The
wallreducesinthicknessandplanasitrisesthroughthebuilding.Thethicknessreduces
from23to20andthento18onthenorthandsouthwallsatlevels9and43
respectively.Thecorehasfour286baysrunningeastwestasitrisesfromLowerLevel
4toLevel42,atLevel43thecoredropsitsoutertwobaysandcontinuesthroughthe
penthousewiththeinnertwobays.Theshearwallreductioninlengthcorrespondstoa
10reductionineastwestwidth,andthetopofthetwostorybelttrusssystem.The
floorandroofdiaphragmscarrythelateralloadstotheshearwallcore.Theshearwallsin
thecorethentransferthebaseshear,overturningmoment,androtationalforcestothe
foundation.
Thebelttrusssystemiscomprisedoftwobracedframesrunningeastwestonthe
northandsouthexteriors,andthreebracedframesspanningnorthsouthtotheconcrete
shearwallontheinteriorofthebuilding.Thetrussmembersarevaryingsizesofsteel
Wideflanges.Thepurposeofthisbelttrusssystemistocreateacouplemoment,from
theoutriggersteelcolumnsintheeventoflateralloading.Thiscouplemomentisapplied
ontheshearwallcoretofightrotationwithinthecore,andthereforereducethedeflection
ofthebuilding.

acton.ThebuildingreceivesthelargestforcefromwindintheNorthSouthdirections,as
thesearethelongerfacadesofthebuildingnormaltothewind.
Thefinalstepinanalyzingthewindforcesiscalculatingthebaseshearand
overturningmomentsappliedatthefoundationtocomparewithseismiccalculations.
Comparisonofthebaseshearandoverturningmomentsbetweenwindandseismicwill
determinethegoverninglateralforcefordesign.ReferenceAppendixBforacomplete

forces.

resultshavenotyetbeenobtained,butareexpectedtobemoreaccurateasitisadirect
studyonascalemodelofthebuilding.MKAdidnotprovideanyseismicdesignvaluesand
itappearsasthoughtheydidnotinspectthem,thiscouldbebecause300NorthLaSalleis
inalowseismicarea.Itcouldalsobeduetotheheightofthebuilding,toppingoffat801,
