EXPERIMENT: I

DETERMINATION OF ACETIC ACID CONTENT OF VINEGAR

APPARATUS: Burette, Pipette, conical flask, Beakers, Volumetric flask (250ml) THEORY: Although vinegar contents different acids, the principal acid in vinegar is acetic acid and federal standards require at least 4gm of acetic acid per 100cm3 of vinegar. The total quality of acid can be readily determined by titration with standard base using phenolphthalein indicator. Although other acids are present, the result is calculated as acetic acid. REACTION: CH3COOH +OH- CH3COO- + H2O PROCEDURE Pipette out 25cm3 of vinegar into a 250cm3 volumetric flasks, dilute to the mark mixing thoroughly. Pipette out 50 cm3 of this solution into a conical flask and add 50cm3 of water and two drops of phenolphthalein indicator and titrate it with standardized supplied base (usually about 0.1M NaOH). Repeat the titration to get concurrent readings.

OBERVATION: Strength of supplied base (NaOH) Table: Titration of vinegar using phenolphthalein as indicator. No. of obs Vol. of Vinegar (ml) Initial (ml) Burette reading Final reading (ml) Concurrent (ml)
