Time : 4 Hours Instructions :1) Answer all questions. 2) Assume any missing data suitably . 3) Khoslas charts are supplied . PART A I. 1) What are the physical factors that govern the selection of a type of dam ? 2) Distinguish between a gallery and a shaft in a dam and give their functions. 3) Why are canal falls constructed in a channel ? Enumerate the different types of canal falls. 4) What are the corrections made to the pressures obtained at the key points in Khoslas theory of independent variables ? (45=20 Marks) PART B II. a) What are the different types of arch dams ? Derive the most economical central angle of an arch dam. OR b) What are the causes of failure of an earth dam ? 10 10 Max. Marks : 100

III. a) Distinguish between the Blighs theory and Khoslas theory for the design of floor thickness of a hydraulic structure. 10 OR b) Describe with the help of sketches the various types of cross-drainage works and the selection of suitable type. 10

PART C IV. a) Design a suitable cross drainage work for the following hydraulic particulars : Discharge of the canal = 28 cumecs Bed width of the canal = 20 m Depth of water in the canal = 1.6 m Bed level of the canal = 250.00 m High flood discharge of the drainage = 400 cumecs High flood level of the drainage = 251.00 m Bed level of the drainage = 248.00 m General ground level = 250.00 m Draw to a suitable scale i) Half plan at top and half plan at foundation level. ii) Longitudinal section along drain. iii) Longitudinal section along canal. OR IV. a) Design a 1.2 m Sarada type fall for a canal having a discharge of 13 cumecs with the following data : Bed level at upstream = 104.00 m Bed level downstream = 102.8 m Full supply level upstream = 105.6 m Bed width u/s and d/s = 1.2 m = 15 Impervious floor design is to be carried out as per Khoslas theory. Draw to a suitable scale i) Half plan at top and half at foundation level. ii) Section through the centre line of the canal. iii) Elevation of the fall from d/s. Safe exit gradiant for Khoslas theory
