Self-monitoring: This is effective for students who are trying to behave appropriately but need some assistance in achieving

their goal. This works best for younger children, so it is appropriate to use in my 3rd grade inclusive classroom. Example: Adam has a problem with interrupting others when they are speaking and getting along with others in the class. He also does not raise his hand first to participate in class; he will shout an answer out without me calling on him. In order for him to change his behavior a self-monitoring chart will be placed on his desk each day. The chart will be broken up in sections of the day. For each section he will have to circle either a smiley face for good behavior, a mutual face, and a frown face for bad behavior. The chart is below. Behavior Contract: This is a contract that the student and I will come to an agreement on and sign. The expected behavior is fully and clearly described. This is for a short time period and the evaluation and outcomes are clearly stated. Example: Effective Dates: From 10/20/2011 to 11/20/2011 I, Rebecca Traficante, the teacher, will give Mark a sticker for his behavior chart each time he does one of the following: Completes his journal entry for the day Turns in homework completed and on time Completes group work cooperatively When Mark has collected 12 stickers from me, Miss. Traficante, he may choose one of the following rewards: Choice of a prize from the Treasure Box 10 minutes on the computer at the end of the day 10 minutes of extra playground time with another class Bonus: If Mark has a perfect week (Monday-Friday) by earning all 3 stickers for each task he finishes each day, he will be able to: Choice an additional prize from the Treasure Box 15 minutes on the computer at the end of the day Friday Penalty: If Mark does not complete 2 out of 3 tasks in one day, he cannot receive all 3 stickers the next day either. The student, Mark, helped me create this behavior contract. He understands and agrees to the terms. Student Signature: ________________________________________ I, Rebecca Traficante, the teacher, agree to carry out my part of the agreement. Mark will receive stickers when he completes each of his tasks, and will also be allowed to collect his rewards when he receives 12 stickers. Mark will also receive his bonus if he earns it. Teacher Signature: _________________________________________ The parent(s) of Mark agree to check his homework each night to make sure that it is complete. The parent(s) will also encourage Mark to complete assignments to achieve his behavior contract goals. Parent Signature: _________________________________________

Home-based reinforcement: This is a strategy in order to get parents involved in their childrens school work and in their childrens behavior. The parents will be notified at the end of each week of their childs behavior with a letter sent home by me. The parents will have to actively take place in conferences with me. At the end of each week if the child has received positive feedback from me, the parents will have to decide on how to reinforce the childs good behavior either with earned privileges, verbal praise, and response costs. Example: Kayla acts out in class. She is considered to be a class clown. She makes jokes while I am trying to teach, makes jokes at other peoples responses to questions, makes fun of others when they get an answer wrong, and makes animal noises during the day. I have teamed up with her parents who are also concerned with her behavior and how it is affecting her academics. Each week on Friday I send a note home with Kayla to report to her parents. Her parents must sign the paper and Kayla must bring it back to school with her on Monday. On Friday, if Kayla had a good week Kaylas parents give her the choice of where they will go to eat that night. She also gets five dollars put into a jar for Kayla to spend at the end of each month on whatever she would like. If Kayla had a bad week, she does not receive any of the rewards. She also is not allowed to hang out with her friends for the entire weekend because one of her favorite things to do is have sleepovers with her best friends.
