Properties of Water Notes

Life- Being able to produce or create the macromolecules of life.
Proteins, Lipids, Carbs, Nucleic Acids

Water is also a molecule essential for life.

Anything alive needs water to sustain it

Water has special properties that help to make life possible. THIS IS a BIG DEAL-THESE PROERTIES HELP SUSTAIN LIFE ON EARTH!!!!!

Property of Water: Polarity

Water is POLAR What does this mean?

Property of Water: Polarity

Water is POLAR What does this mean? Water has two poles b/c of the way its electrons balance
A negative pole A positive pole

Property of Water: Polarity

Water is POLAR What does this mean?

B/c water is polar it can attract other molecules with charges, or that are polar themselves (including more water molecules)This is the formation of hydrogen bonds

Property of Water: Adhesion & Capillary Action

Adhesion is the attraction of molecules from one substance to be attracted to or bond to molecules in a different substance.
Adhesion occurs because water molecules are polar- they attract molecules on another surface and they can stick to them
Water droplets Stick to the grass because of adhesion

Adhesion causes Capillary action- Because if water can stick to other surfaces it can essentially crawl up a tube against gravity as it sticks to the surfaces

The water curves up in a tube b/c it is attracted to the sides of the tube- this is called adhesion

Water climbs up tubescalled capillary action

Why Might this be important for Survival?

A. Think about your blood- your blood has to travel from your heart to your feet and all over your body and back again B. Think about plants- plants have to get water from their roots in the ground all the way to the tops of their stems, branches and leaves

Property of Water: Cohesion & Surface Tension

Cohesion- is a property where the molecules within a substance are attracted to each other. Water molecules are attracted to each other. Because of Cohesion, Water has Surface Tension. The surface of water acts like a thin elastic film-this is because polarity causes a strong bond between molecules at the surface
Because the water molecules stick together they form a droplet shape

The water curves down in a tube b/c it the molecules are attracted to each other- this is called cohesion

Because the water molecules stick together at the surface this causes a tension that allows this spider to walk on water

Property of Water: Specific Heat & Vaporization

The Heat of vaporization is the amount of heat it takes to convert a liquid into a gas. Some molecules have low heat of vaporization which means they turn into gases at much cooler temperatures. Water has a high heat of vaporization which means it takes a lo of heat to turn water into steam or gas. Specific Heat is the amount of energy or heat required to raise a substances temperature 1 degree Celsius- water has a high specific heat- it takes a lot of energy to raise the temperature of water.

Why is this important to life

A. Your body is over 70% water- this number is similar for other living organisms. What if our body was made of a different molecule that was not quite so resistant to temperature changes- what could happen to us if it got too hot, or too cold outside? B. What could happen to lakes, rivers, and the ocean if they were made of a liquid that wasnt quite so resistant to temperature changes?
What would happen to the life that lives inside these lakes/oceans etc.

Property of Water: A Universal Solvent

Because water is polar that means that it can dissolve things that are also polar. If it can dissolve polar things that means that water molecules can surround ions and transport them long distances- these polar substances wont settle out of water or float, but dissolve into the water. Things that arent polar wont mix or dissolve into water.

Why is this important to life?

A. Many of the nutrients and chemicals necessary for maintaining homeostasis and balance in a healthy life are polar molecules or chemicals that separate into ions. These need to travel around our body- much of our blood is made of water- how does this and water as a universal solvent relate and sustain life? B. What kinds of things would we not want to be polar and dissolve in water? Why? C. Cell membranes are made of lipids (fats). Lipids are non-polar. How does this help protect a cell on our body?

Property of Water: Density

Water is weird- water is one of the only molecules that you can find on earth as a solid liquid and a gas. Most other substances require temperatures much higher than normal temperatures on earth to become liquids or gases, or temperatures much colder than earths temperatures to be solids. When water freezes it is less dense than it is in liquid form. That means that for the amount of space it takes up it is less heavy taking up the same space as a solid than it is as a liquid

Why is this important for life?

A. If Ice sank instead of floating how could this affect rivers/lakes/oceans and the animals that live inside of them during the winter time?
