June 14 is Flag Day in the U.S., and it celebrates when John Adams introduced a resolution about the new flag to the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The resolution stated, Resolved, that the flag of the thirteenth United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, that the union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation. The first flag of the U.S. had a star and stripe for each of the 13 colonies. The symbolism of the flag was interpreted by

George Washington by saying, We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty. The colors on the flag have the following meanings: RED = hardiness & valor WHITE = purity & innocence BLUE = vigilance, perserverance, & justice. Since 1777, the flag has been changed 26 times. The last change to the flag was after Hawaii was admitted into the Union in 1959.

Men, Listen Up! {JUNE IS MENS HEALTH MONTH}

The purpose of Mens Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. This month gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. The response has been overwhelming with thousands of awareness activities in the USA and around the globe. Mens Health Month is celebrated across the country with screenings, health fairs, media appearances, and other health education and outreach activities. Congressman Bill Richardson sums it up best by stating, Recognizing and preventing mens health problems is not just a mans issue. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, mens health is truly a family issue. Statistics show that 100% of women are more likely than men to visit a doctor, and men die at higher rates than women from the top 10 causes of death. Observers of Mens Health Week (the week prior to Fathers Day) are sometimes seen wearing a blue ribbon as a symbol of their support for the fight against prostate cancer.
