Motivation

Identify Topics: choose a topic with an organized body of knowledge. Specify Learning Goals: decide exactly what you want students to understand about the topic Content Goals: be very clear about the relationships you want students to identify, understand, and remember Planning for Critical Thinking: fight the urge to identify patterns in the information for the students and plan steps for them to find the connections. Prepare Data Representations: prepare the information that students will analyze into a graphic organizer. Gathering Data: have students gather some data and add additional data yourself.

Effective Data Displays: Display information factually and provide sufficient information. Specify Questions

Open Ended Phase: learners describe, compare, and search for patterns. Open ended questions, break the ice, ensure success, and promote student involvement. Record the students observations on the board for future reference. The Causal phase: learners offer explanations for similarities and differences. Ask why questions that have explainable answers. The Hypothetical Phase: learners hypothesize outcomes for different conditions Closure and Application: learners generalize to form broad relationships, apply their understanding to new situations, and understand the big idea

Assess content outcomes according to the learning goals. Assessing critical thinking also assesses content, therefore, always consider the content focus of each item. Use assessment to increase learning through giving feedback after a quiz.

Involvement and Cooperation: students are motivated by working together and by contributing to the information gathering process Success and Perceptions of increasing competence: openended questions and recording data on the board motivates through increasing students feelings of success Challenge: students are intrinsically motivated by a challenging task.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

The integrative model motivates students through involvement, cooperation, success, and challenge to develop a deep understanding of organized bodies of information while also practicing critical thinking skills.
