Common Core/ NM Content Standards: RL9-10.1; RL9-10.2; RL9-10.3; W9-10.1; W9-10.2; W9-10.4 Essential Question(s): What are the essential elements of the plot of the book? The themes? The characters? Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students will connect their knowledge of plot, theme, and character from previously read books and use it to help them understand these concepts in our current reading. Resources/Materials Teacher: Students: I Heard the Owl Call my Name
Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.): Students who require it will receive extended deadlines for writing assignments and/or shortened reading.

Time allotted MONDAY Learning TargetStudents will understand the concepts of theme, character, and plot in literature. They will show their learning through written chapter analyses that describe these three key elements. Each student will read I Heard the Owl Call my Name at their own pace. For each chapter, they must complete a paragraph analysis that demonstrates understanding of theme, plot and character. Once they have completed the book and ALL their chapter analyses, they may begin the independent reading project, which will be shortly announced.
