Kelsey Proctor Argumentative Speech November 9, 2010 Introduction I.

Attention-getter: Some blamed fish, rats, mosquitoes Some blamed fish, fleas, rats, cats, mosquitoes, shark vapors, radio waves, tobacco smoke, car exhaust, doctors beards and monkeys. Some even blamed parents for tickling their children. Some blamed spiders for injecting poisons into bananas. A. Doctors did odd things to treat polio. People tried swallowing cat nip, and rubbing earthworm oil on their skin. They drank frogs blood, snakes blood, and horses blood. Some people even got to the point where they hung charms around their neck to try and get rid of the disease. Doctors performed even outrageous treatments. Some doctors injected human saliva into the spines of infected kids or took out spinal fluid and injected it back into other places in their body. Sometimes the doctors would try and replace the spinal fluid with salt water Doctors still dont know how to treat Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers and Autism. A. Some believe that mercury in vaccinations cause Autism B. Credibility: Im not a scientist, however I have done my research on how vaccinations help us. I have also put into consideration the viewpoints of the parents who have autistic children. Body I. If vaccinations do cause autism, scientists wouldnt continue to distribute them.
Quote: Some people who believe that vaccinations cause Autism - Paul A. OffitSome

people who believe that vaccines cause autism hate me because they think Im in the pocket of pharmaceutical industry, that I say vaccines are safe because I am paid to do it. To them, it is logical that I would spend twenty five years working on a rotavirus vaccine- a vaccine that has the chance of saving hundreds of thousands of lives every year-so that I could lie about vaccine safety and hurt children. But the reason I say vaccines dont cause autism is because they dont. I say this because the false alarm about vaccines and autism continues to harm a lot of childrenharm from not getting needed vaccines, harm from potentially dangerous treatments to eliminate mercury (the specific element that is believed to cause autism), and harm from therapies as absurd as testosterone ablation and electric shockI say this because I care about children with autism (Offit xvii). A. II. (Transition) Although I strongly believe that vaccinations do not cause Autism, not everyone agrees. A. Shell quote Lyn Redwood stated that because of the disease her baby stopped looking her in the eyes and started acting very strangely. Lyn stated that the disease, had taken away my babys soul and left a shell of him there (Levin).

B. However, there are too many chemicals that children have access to that we dont fully understand; whether its in food, water or cleaning products. We cant blame vaccinations for causing autism when there are no straight facts leading to that conclusion. Conclusion I. (Transition) Understandably, parents dont want to be left in the dark.
Pumpkin quote Parents

like Cheryl Dass want to know why Going out in public "is a train wreck," Chryl stated that, It's impossible to do the family things others take for granted, like going to a movie or church or to even to pick out a pumpkin," or Kelly Kerns of Kansas , who has an autistic daughter and twin sons, said, "We're not the families that are doing baseball and birthday parties. A. B. Again, if doctors had full-blown evidence, they wouldnt continue to distribute them. II. Even though I am not a scientist I hope that you all understand that vaccinations are here to help us. Thanks to the fact that most children in developing countries around the world are immunized with the WHOrecommended vaccinations, 2.5 million deaths are prevented each year (Maurice 5). There are now 30 diseases that vaccinations can prevent
