Allie Griffiths Beginner Band Rehearsal Plan for Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Time Allotted: 10 Minutes Piece to be Rehearsed: Ob-La-Di,

Ob-La-Da New Vocab Terms to Teach: Staccato Tenuto Glissando Subito

Winds and Percussion Due: 11/26/12

Objectives: To read through the piece at least once To introduce the students to the above vocab terms (using examples) To introduce the students to the concept of playing on the off-beats To perfect and perform successively measures 20 through 43 (in order to highlight the trickiest rhythm in the piece and to close off the rehearsal in complete way) For me personally: keep a steady, manageable tempo (about 80) For me personally: stay focused and maintain an easy-to-follow conducting pattern in 4 For me personally: stay positive and patient For me personally: make the experience fun

Introducing the New Stuff (Prior to actually playing) : 2 minutes (KEEP IT BRIEF) a. Start with the easiest new stuff: articulation. Have the band look at measure 12 in the flute/clarinet part (simplifies the rhythm of the chorus) AND YOU SING THE ARTICULATIONS and have them echo, using ta for staccato notes and da for tenuto notes (including the half notes). Do this exercise 3 times in a row. ***Explain to the them prior to exercise what EXACTLY you want to do (maybe even demonstrate a bit of it) b. Move on to the trombone stuff: ***while working with the trombones, have the other band members finger through their parts*** Have the trombones look at bar 13 in their scores and explain to them how to glissando. Have them play it! Be sure to tell them to have fun with it and play as loud as they can while maintaining a decent tone (dont blow your brains out). Then direct them to bar 20 and ask for the attention of the whole band again; explain that subito means suddenly and ask them to sing something as loudly as they can for 2 beats and then sing as softly as they can for the next 2 beats. c. Move on to the off-beat concept: have half the class clap on the big beats and have the other half clap the eighth notes, then ask all the kids to sing on the and of each beat **as you count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and do this for 3 bars! d. Move on to the tricky rhythm in the bridge section (couple of kids): ***use an echo exercise*** As you conduct slowly, sing the first measure of the pattern and ask them to repeat it after you (do this 2x); then sing the second measure of the pattern and do the same (2x); finally sing through the entire pattern and have them repeat (2x) e. Alert the students to trouble spots: Chorus (playing on off-beats); measure 20 (tricky rhythm)

II. Play through the piece in its entirety: 3-4 minutes a. Make mental note of who needs help and where!

III.

Fix it: 2 minutes a. Isolate the trouble spots and help the students work through them b. When a group is not being worked with, ask them to finger their parts silently

IV.

Final Performance: 2 minutes (BE PREPARED TO SHORTEN THIS) a. Have the students play bars 20 through to the end in order to leave them with a sense of accomplishment b. If there isnt enough time: play bars 34 through the end

V.

If time a. Talk to them about the lyrics and what the piece means
