Presentation on Garment Accessories

Introduction

Accessories are the materials other than fabrics used in garments for both functional and ornamentation purposes. These may be made of metals, fabrics, cross-link polymers, elastics etc. These vary according to the end use. For functional purposes these may be used for fastening, body fitting, shape retention etc. for ornamentation different types of embroideries are used. The aspects of these items which are important are the functions they serve, the materials from which they are made or they are attached to or applied to the garments and the performance properties which they must have. Their material and performance properties are only of importance in the current context.

Commonly used garment accessories are Labels and motifs Linings Interlinings Wadding Lace braid and elastics Hook and loop fastening Seam binding and tape Shoulder pads Eyelets and laces Zip fasteners Buttons Snap fasteners

Labels and motifs: Labels normally give the


companys name and garment size and fitting and they are used in mens and womens outer wear and tailored garments the term motif is often used to describe a decorative addition to a garment along with carrying a companys name, trademark or logo.

Lining: These are used variously to maintain the


shape of garment, improve the hand and comfort by allowing it to slide over other garments to add insulation to cover the inside of a garment of complicated construction to make it neat. Linings are made from

polyester, polyamide, acetate and viscose etc.

Wadding: Wadding or batting are the names given to


the fibre fillings used in garments where warmth is required without great weight. The fibres most commonly used are polyester and polypropylene.

Lace, braid and elastic


The narrow trimmings generally referred to as lace and braid can be various natural and synthetic fibres mainly PE, PAN, PE/Cotton for lace and wool or acrylic for the braid. Their uses are normally decorative although these may be functional as well. Lace is an open structure originally made by hand but now by machine.

Eyelets and laces


Garments usually require small holes in them in the form of eyelets for various functions such as for the prong of buckles of the belt, for the emergence of drawstrings at waist or around hoods and for use with lacing as a fastening.

Snap fasteners
Snap or stud fasteners come in a variety of types but all consists of four elements , a cap and a socket which fit together and form the outer after female part of the fastening and prong fastener are generally suitable for knitted fabrics. Snap fasteners can be made from plastic, steel or brass.

Shoulder pad
Shoulder pads are available in different shapes and thickness to suit the garments style. It is widely used both for men and ladies wear. They are made from foam with a light weighted knitted Polyamide covering.

Seam binding and tapes


In some type of garment neatening of seam edges by means of over drying is inadequate or inappropriate and the fabric edges are bound with bias cut stripes as woven fabrics often a satin construction passed through a folder. Tapes is often used along the joining stitches, in a superimposed seam if there is a ruts that the seam may stretch in wear

Hooks and loop fastening


This item consists of two woven polyamide tapes , one covered with very fine hooks and the other with very fine when pressed together. They adhere securely to each other. Hook and loop fastening is used in only a limited number of garment applications but where it is used its particulars properties are extremely valuable.

Zip fasteners There are three types of zippers Conventional here one end is open and applied in open
placket application

Separating- both ends of the zipper are open and mainly


used in jackets.

Invisible- one end is open and teeth are hidden


zipped only the tab is visible.

Interlining
These are used to support, reinforce and control areas of garments such as collars, Cuffs ,waist bands ,hems facings etc. tey may be sewn into garments or may be attached by means of fusion technology.

Buttons Buttons are usually used for fastening purpose and can also be used for ornamentation. These are usually round in shape. These have 2-4 holes to sew them to garments. These are made of plastic or metal.

Conclusion
The importance of garment accessories cannot be neglected in the present scenario where they fulfill both the purposes of decoration and functionality. Possibilities of implementation for further comfort and application in field of specialized fabrics are yet to be exploited.
