Grade/Class: First Grade Subject Area: Language Arts Topic: Print Concepts Day: 3 Common Core Standard(s): Primary

Standard - F.1.1- Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. F.1.1.A- Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation). W.1.7-Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure I Can Statement(s): I can use end punctuation Students Prior Knowledge/Background Experiences: This is day 3 of this writing assignment called I am an Expert. The students each chose a topic they are experts on. They already planned and wrote a first draft of their papers. They will now use their first drafts to practice beginning and ending sentences with correct punctuation. We have been discussing this in recent guided reading groups and the students have practiced finding capital letters in the beginning of sentences and periods/question marks/exclamation marks at the end of sentences. They will now practice this in their writing. Materials and Resources Needed: First drafts of I am an Expert papers 1 green crayon for each student 1 red crayon for each student Smartboard/white board Red marker Green marker Teaching Strategies: Anticipatory Strategies I will write the following sentence on the board with a black Smartboard pin this way-i am a soccer expert. I will say This is the first sentence of my paper. Think about the punctuation rules we talked about during our reading groups. Who can raise their hand and tell me one thing they would fix in this sentence. I will choose a student to answer the question. If they cannot tell me anything to fix, I will prompt them further. Look at the beginning of this sentence, how should this look? Yes, this I should be capitalized. One reason is that I is always capitalized and another reason is what? I will call on a student to tell me that the first letter in the first word of a sentence should always be capitalized. With a green Smartboard pen, I will then write a

capital I on top of the black lowercase I which I had originally written. Now lets look at the end of the sentence. What are we missing? I will choose another student to answer that we need a period. I will then take the red marker and add a period to the end of the sentence. Developmental Strategies Lets look at my sentence now. What color did I correct the beginning of my sentence with? Right, green. What can the color green represent? What does it mean in traffic lights? Green means go! I chose green to show that I know the correct way to get my sentence going. Now look at the end of my sentence. I chose what color? Yes, red. What does red mean in a traffic light? Red means stop! I made the period red to show that I know the correct way to end a sentence. Now you are going to practice this on your papers. Concluding Strategies In a minute you will go back to your seats and get one green crayon and one red crayon. Very carefully read over your paper and use your green and red crayons on each sentence to check that you used the correct punctuation. Remember which color to use in the beginning I will give the students a chance to say green. And which color do we use to stop the sentence? I will give the students a chance to say red. After you finish checking your own paper, switch with the person sitting next you to make sure you found all the correct punctuations. I will then monitor the students as they check their papers and their partners paper. Tomorrow we will write our final drafts and create illustrations to go with our papers. Assessment: My formative assessment will be when I check the students papers after the lesson to see if the students used the green and red crayons to correct their punctuations. EC accommodations/modifications to strategies or assessments: All IEP guidelines will be strictly adhered to.
