Wetlands constantly changes from dry to wet, most of the time they are diverse as rain forests Wetlands = shallow water-fed systems o Important and necessary in ecosystem o Provide habitat, spawning grounds o Nesting area for migratory birds Wetlands can serve as a sink for carbon dioxide It have commercial and utilitarian functions: o Sources of lucrative harvests: Rice o Furbearing animals o Fish o Shellfish Wetlands are also known as Natures Kidneys because: o Able to reduce waves impacts o Convey floodwater o Trap sediment o Reduce pollution Wetlands are disappearing at a rapid rate o In U.S. - more than half these regions in all the states expect for Alaska and Hawaii, have been destroyed Estimated that only 6% of the worlds land = wetlands Hard to preserve wetlands because they have a constantly changing nature; therefore its hard to make policies about them Hydrophytes = plants that have to adapt to surrounding to survive. Hydric soil = changes colors and odor Wetlands are found in diverse topographical settings Wetlands exists in freshwater rivers, streams, and lakes Determines water levels by: o Tides o Precipitation o Runoff When a wetland is connected to another body of water, it can serve as a feeding and reproductive ground. Wetlands can by destroyed by watershed and pumping of groundwater Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria founds in wetlands can convert nitrogen in harmless gas Barriers prevent wetlands room to move causing it to disappear either temporary or permanent.

Decreasing of sediments in wetlands may also lead to loss of wetland

Wetlands are an important factor in our ecosystem. They prevent floods, trap sediments and reduce pollutions. Unfortunately, scientist estimated that only 6% of earths lands are wetlands. Wetlands water levels are constantly changing because of the fall and rise of tides, precipitations and runoffs. Due to its constantly changing nature, policies to protect them are difficult to be made. Even so, they are still a shelter for a diverse group of organisms. Many organisms utilize it as a reproduction and feeding ground, and birds use it as a nesting area. Wetlands are disappearing at a rapid rate due to the lack of room to move and the amount of sediments decreasing, partially the cause of humans activities. Humans activities can damage and destroy the ecosystem. They destroyed many forests and polluted the water, even causing wetlands to disappear. Many organisms depend on wetlands for survival, but they are disappearing rapidly. I think some people only want to gain things that would benefit them, so they do not mind it if something else is destroyed, but they are forgetting that wetlands are beneficial to not only animals who inhabits it, but also to humans. Wetlands can prevent floods and even purifies water, but humans are destroying these environments for development. To prevent more wetlands to be destroy, people should stop any humans activity that would be destructive to wetlands.
