Desert Vista Elementary School- Apache Junction, Janell Sterner, 6th grade teacher: The lesson brought the subject down to grade level understanding. CitC opened my students eyes to what the Constitution contains and how it relates to them. Students enjoy being involved in activities and having many visual aids.

History
Constitution in the Classroom (CitC) started in February, 2012. An AZ Department of Education official brought together a group of five individuals who had a background in Constitutional study. Going forward they began to build an organization for teaching children Constitutional principles. Age appropriate curriculum was developed with Power Point lessons and materials. Thanks to a strong networking system, CitC is now training volunteer teachers on a weekly basis.

Lesson Objectives
1. Students will discover the technology leap that followed the adoption of the Constitution and of the significance of the USA becoming the Land of Opportunity. 2. Students will learn that a study of government is a study of power and who controls that power. They will see the good sense and stability of governmental power when placed in the broad base of the people providing greater individual freedom than any other form of government. 3. The truth will be emphasized that all rights reside first in the people and second in the sovereign states as declared in the 9th and 10th amendments. This establishes the proper role of government as intended by the Founders. A critical concept included in the Constitution. 4. Students will be educated on the differences between capitalism and socialism to counter ideas on world governments and collectivism that have infiltrated into education compromiseing true principles espoused by the Founding Fathers. These lessons aim to teach the success formula that was the foundation of the country. 5. Knowledge of the success of the founding documents will instill this pledge: We will save our Constitution and keep a good thing going. Note: These lessons do not contain any discussions of political parties, candidates, officials in office, or of current contentious subjects.

Mission Statement
Our purpose is to instruct the children of Arizona on the true principles of liberty as established by the framers of the Constitution. This will prepare the next generation to protect and secure these precious liberties as well as to take an active role in government. Volunteer teachers with age appropriate material will give students a working knowledge of the Constitution and its application to current problems. The goal is to reinforce their determination to protect the basic freedoms of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness which are quickly slipping away.
