Study on weldability of low alloy ultrahigh strength steel 1.6959

Before heat treatment
A. Roshanghias1 ,A. H. Kokabi2,M. Barzegari3

Abstract
A new ultrahigh strength low alloy steel (DIN 1.6959) has a carbon equivalent value of nearly
1% that classifies it as a "very difficult to weld" steel.
In this research, the welding characteristics of DIN 1.6959 steel before heat treatment
has been studied.
The effect of welding heat treating cycle (preheat, interpass, postheat) on metallurgical and
mechanical properties of weldments have been investigated by means of tensile, impact and
hardness tests and metallographical observations.
It has been observed that by exerting high temperature stress relief (600c), welding could be
done in annealed condition without preheat.
Also according to the mechanical results, the tempered marthensite microdtructure in HAZ
(preheat & postheat at 200c and stress relief at 600c) shows the most efficient mechanical
characteristics.
