Different ways to classify networks


Scope refers to the distance of the computers attached to the network Architecture describes how a network is arranged and how resources are shared. Topology the way in which computers are arranged.(star, ring, etc.) Protocol the common set of rules and signals that computers on the network use to transfer data.

Types of Networking According to Scope


Local Are Network (LAN) - connects a group of computers that are physically located within a small area. *packet a block of data sent over a network. *gateway a device used to link 2 different networks.

Wide Are Network (WAN) - connects computers spread across a large geographical area, covering a number of cities, states or even countries. Wireless Networks - any kind of computer network where the computers and other peripherals are not connected to each other by physical cables.
