Title of Experience/Artifact: Health Classroom Management Plan Date Experience Completed: Fall Semester 2013 Artifact Description: I have

included a health education classroom management plan, put together in a methods in teaching health education course. It contains and covers a variety of areas, including a mission statement, theory alignment, classroom rules, discipline hierarchy, positive behavior, communication and involvement. This health management plan directly reflects the rules and theories I plan on instilling in my future classroom. Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment: I believe this artifact best aligns with Standard Five: Learning Environment; Teachers know how to manage a classroom. The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and selfmotivation. This standard fits perfectly with this artifact because it is a classroom management plan. It is important to understand that each class will be different and it is important to have everything under control upon students entering the classroom. A classroom management plan is vital with implementing classroom rules, positive reinforcements, group expectations, safety procedures, and communication with parents, etc. This artifact demonstrates competency in this standard because students as individuals and as a whole will help create classroom rules, be positively engaged and communicate in a variety of ways, which will overall provide an encouraging and motivating classroom environment. UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skills, Dispositions Alignment: I believe this artifact aligns with KSD2.d. Manages Students Behavior; the candidate can establish clear standards of conduct with student input. The monitoring of these standards is subtle and preventative with respectful student self- and peer monitoring also occurring. The candidate can respond to misbehavior effectively, being sensitive to individual needs. This artifact fits with this KSD because a classroom management plan revolves around student behavior. Establishing clear rules and expectations will help avoid problems and ensure a positive learning environment. It is also important for students to know and understand the consequences of their actions if misbehavior does occur. This artifact demonstrates competency in this KSD alignment because this classroom management plan incorporates the philosophy of developmental discipline, which manages misbehavior by helping students understand the reasons behind classroom rules and expectations, teaches relevant skills they may be lacking, and engages students in a collaborative, problem-solving process aimed at stopping misbehavior. This philosophy attempts to build a community within the

classroom, in which the stated learning goals are being achieved and in which each childs personal needs for competence, autonomy and respect are being met. Secondary KSD alignments include: KSD2.a: Creates an environment of respect and rapport KSD2.b: Establishes a culture for learning KSD2.c: Manages classroom procedures KSD2.e: Organizes physical space What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience: I learned a variety of things about classroom management plans from this experience. Without a clear, set management plan within your classroom, students will not be productively engaged and positively learning throughout the class. When students have a voice in deciding what rules to instill, they are more inclined to obey the rules and individually hold themselves accountable to them. Throughout the process of creating my classroom management plan, I was able to review other management plans and theories and learned that there is a right or wrong way. As long as there is a plan containing a plan of attack is whats important. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience/artifact: As a future educator, this experience has taught me the importance of explaining and covering classroom rules and expectations at the very beginning of each year. I also learned that handling discipline issues may and will vary depending on each situation and student. Keeping in contact with students guardians is another vital component when instilling a classroom management plan, insuring they are up-todate on activities taking place within their childs life. This experience opened my eyes to problems I might encounter as a future educator, and also prepared me in a variety of situations.
