Ashley Evans Blakely Leadership Proposal 2013

Leadership Goal
1. My goal is to reduce school violence and bullying by educating my colleagues on the statistics, effects, and signs of bullying. I also hope to reduce fear among our students and promote a safe environment for all students at John Horn High School. 2. I plan to include all the staff members of John Horn High School. Every adult on campus comes into contact with students on a daily basis and need to be aware of any threatening and violent behavior on campus, and what to do in the event they witness such actions taking place.

How I Will Achieve My Goal

1. I would like to make use of a youtube video made by young people being bullied. I plan to use this video as an opener and a way to attract attention and perhaps even touch on the emotions of faculty members in order to gain their attention. 2. I plan to discuss the statistic of bullying as well as the types of bullying that takes place. 3. I might have the teachers discuss in small groups situations of bulling they have witnessed as teachers (or students if they are new teachers fresh out of college. 4. Give the faculty members opportunities to discuss in large groups. 5. I plan to give faculty members ideas as to how to limit bullying in our school using findings from my research. Data Supporting the Need

1. We plan to create a survey for the faculty both before our staff development training as well as after. 2. We will also created a survey for the administrators and school counselors to complete some time after the training session in order to see how effective the training was for our school. We will do this by asking questions regarding how often the faculty members (in regards to bullying) are communicating to the administrators and counselors, as a result of our training. 3. We might create a form that faculty members can fill out upon the realization that bullying is taken place.

Leadership Opportunities
This will be my first time on the Staff Development team. I have always been interested in assisting staff development and have had the desire to teach teachers, and now I have the opportunity to work with other teachers in achieving this goal. Not only will I be leading lessons on bullying, but I am now a part of the staff development team which will give me more opportunities to use the leadership skills I learn in class to apply them at my school. I am hoping that my chosen topic bullying will reach all faculty members. Teachers are not the only people who come in contact with students secretaries, janitors, counselors, administrators, security guards, cafeteria workers, and aids will all be given the opportunity to learn about bullying and how to create a safe environment for our students.

Partners
1. I plan to partner with Anne-Elise Raya for this leadership assignment. She will focus on data collecting, as well as researching preventive measures, while I plan to put together the lesson that will take place on campus. We live in the same neighborhood, so it will be very convenient for the two of us to get together as frequently as needed in order to work on this project. 2. Anne-Elise will also focus on the SPED aspect of bullying. 3. We plan to use handouts that show various statistics and other data in regards to bullying, as well as the projector in order to show videos via the web. a. We have a bullying powerpoint presentation that Leander ISD created, and are going to use this during our presentation. b. We have a youtube video (its a 5 minute poem) from the perspective of the bully. c. We have a Bullying Incident Report we are going to discuss with our staff and distribute to everyone. d. The survey we will use will ask Administrators and Counselors how often bullying is reported by our staff. (before and after presentation) 4. I imagine the bullying lesson will be 25-45 minutes long

Since it was the end of the school year and graduation was approaching, the principal was a little difficult contact. Furthermore, I am out on maternity leave and was just released to drive a week and a half ago due to my being on pain mediation from my surgery. However, I finally got his secretary on the phone and through her he approved Bullying as a staff development class for next year and asked me to become a part of the staff development team, which will meet three times over the summer.
