THE GLOBAL PLANT FLOOR

Research is saying that in the future, ordinary people will be able to make physical objects usually produced by large scale industrial manufacturers. This would be done through collaborative processes, so they may not produce the whole product but can be part of making a particular aspect of it. Much like the way normal people can edit and contribute to Wikipedia. Different people or companies focus on the aspects of the product that they specialise in. For example, people who specialise in making engines will do so, while people who specialise in assembling will put all the components together. Through working with various partners on development products, costs can be reduced.
