Shree Annapurna Stotram

Note on vowel sounds: If we consider the last line of each verse,
, the part is a direct conversation between
the devotee and Devi. The devotee is addressing the Devi and wants Her to
give him/her bhiksha, i.e., alms, or the daily food to sustain the body. Since
represents a direct conversation, the noun that follows be the
sambodhanam form and therefore the e sound at the end become a short
vowel sound (hrusvam). All the other lines of each verse describe the Devi as
Annapoorna. Hence, all of them must also be short vowel sounds as given
here. I have seen other text where all the vowels are elongated ,
etc. IMHO, this is incorrect. One can of course come up with a (convoluted)
justificatioin for the long vowels sounds and interpret the slokas differently.
As with many slokas, I am sure the error somehow crept into various texts
and has been perpetuated over the years.
The use of the vocative case (sambodhanam) is obvious from the use of
AnnapoorNe, SadaapoorNe, Vallabhe, in verse 11, all of which are vocative
cases of the nouns, Annapoorna, Sadaapoorna, Vallabhaa, all with long vowel
sounds at the end, as with female names (hence aa in the English
transliteration). In verse 12, all sounds are long ee since this is not the
sambodhanam (vocative case) but nominative case (parthama) where one is
naming. In verse 11, however, the same Parvati is being addressed, or spoken
to, and hence the short vowel sound.

Shri Durga Kshama
Prathana Stotram
http://shivu360.blogspot.com/2008/10/shrikshama-prathana-stotram-durga.html

This eulogy or stuti is a part

of Durga Saptashati. Usually,
when the prayers are ordinarily
done, we make mistakes in the
prayer methods (incorrect
pronunciation, for instance).
This eulogy is sung in the end
to ask for forgiveness and for
any mistakes or incomplete
offerings.

The meaning
Oh great goddess, I commit thousands of offences routinely,
So please think me as your slave and please pardon me. 1

Page | 26

I do not how to invoke you, nor do I know how do send you away,
And I also do not know how to worship you, and please pardon me. 2
I do not know chants or holy action or devotion, Oh God of the devas,
And so whatever worship I do, please make it complete. 3
If one calls you, Mother of the universe and commits hundred mistakes,
Still you look after his salvation, and this cannot be done by Brahma and other
devas. 4
Oh mother of the universe , having committed several mistakes I seek your
refuge,
And please decide on the fate of this shivering one according to your wishes. 5
Oh great goddess I have done all this due to ignorance and wayward thoughts,
And so excuse them all and be pleased with me. 6
Oh Goddess of love, Oh mother of the world, Oh source of eternal happiness,
Please accept my worship and with love become pleased with me. 7
Oh goddess who is secret of secrets, Please accept the chanting done by me,
And make me powerful, through your grace, Oh Goddess of the devas. 8

Stotram

http://stotramaala.blogspot.com/search/label/Saraswati
(The English transliteration as posted by Subha Saikumar has been edited here
for consistency of transliteration and the first verse corrected, see also second
link and the text that follows in the next version of this stotram. Note that ALL
the vowel sounds in this stotram, ending in ee, are long vowels (deergham)
since they are all names of Saraswati hence the nominative case, singular
form, of the female noun. A short vowel, single e or i, is used when the deity is
being addressed, vas in the first verse below, when vocative case or saptami in
grammar, is to be used as also in Namastestu Mahaamaye Mahaalakshmi
namostu te. Here the devotee is calling Saraswati or Mahalakshmi by name and
addressing Her directly.)

AUM HRIM SHRIM SHRI SHARADA

VARNATMIKAYAI NAMAH
Sharad Kumud Lochanyai Namah
Namaskar to the Divine Mother Sharada, whose eyes look like the Sharad Kumud-the lotus of the
autumn season. The Markandeya Purana puts emphasis on the Shardiya Puja of Nine days known as the
Anushthhans or invocation of the Nava Ratra, which falls in the Shukla Paksha of Ashvin, of the Sharad
Ritu/ season. Sharad means Paripakvata or maturity. The maturity can be of thought, word and deed
with respect to time, place and situation. This is the beauty of Sharada Devi.

The Rigveda says: Pavakah Nah Sarasvati Vajibhir Vajinivati. Yajnyanam Vashtu Dhiya Vasu
(1-131). The translation runs as: Saraswati- Sharada purifies the person who comes close to her.
She bestows knowledge, strength, prospereity and intellect to the devotees. May she help us to
propitiate the Devas in the Vedic Yajnyas/ fire offerings! The Rig Veda says: O Saraswati ! You
are the very strength of Motherhood. You are Divine and the most learned one. We can not
understand the Divine impression, without your compassion and grace. O Mother! You lead us to
perfection in our obligation to the Devatas!
R.V. 2-41-16Y
O Saraswati! You are yourself the most glorious Goddess . You bless us with your glorious looks
. You grant strength and valor to the brave. You enhance our intellect grants. O Sharada! You are
without any trace of ignorance. You accompany the wise in accomplishing the noble deeds.
RV 6-49-7
O Sharade! Give us strength, courage and bless us for performing the good and noble deeds, to
make humanity nobler and wiser.
R V 2-95-2
Sharada Devi is the Presiding Devi of Kashmir. Since Sharada. Devi is the VAK of the Vedas,
therefore, she is revered as the Saraswati of the Puranas. Her presence is in the manifestation of
the Eternal sound known as Shabda Brahman of the Upanishads and Nada of the Agamas and
Tantras. Sharada is the Divine consciousness, higher than the five sheaths or coverings, as
referred to in the Vedanta. Sharada is the Paripakvata/total emancipation of the human being,
where awareness is considered at the Chaitanya. Thus the human being considers Etad SatyamTadaiva Satyam, in his own existence. It reflects that nothing is illusion, but appearance of
illusion is in itself the manifestation of That real. Sharada is not the symbol but the name of
Pranava, manifest in AUM. Various are the names of the Sharada, and Sharada Sahsranama
Page | 55

speaks the glory of Shri Sharada with One Thousand Names. It is the Agamic approach to adore
the Sharada Devi. In the Markandeya Purana, Sharada is adored as:
Mahavidya Mahavani Bharati Vak Saraswati,
Arya Brahmi Kamadhenu Vedagarbha Cha Dhishwari
Pradhanik Rahasya16
Akshamala Ankusha Dhara Vina Pustaka Dharini
Pradhanik Rahasya 15
She is the excellent Mother, possessing in her hands the garland of Rudraksha beads, goad, Vina
and the fourVedas in her hands. These names have been given by Mahalakshmi to Sharada Devi.
Sharada Devi Patu Nah

Saraswati Maha bhage Varde Vishva Rupini

Kaamrupi Vishalakshe Vidyam Dehi Parmeshvari 1
( O Saraswati! You are the great source of knowledge, giving
credence to the great realization of the Absolute. You are
extended in the whole universe. Desire is also your form, as
you are the supreme sovereign excellence. Give me the boon
of wisdom and knowledge.)
Sharade Maya Drishta Vinapustaka Dharini
Hamsa Vahini Samyukta vidyadanam Kuru Mam 2
O Sharada! I have seen you holding the Vedas and the Vina.
You ride on the Swan. I seek the boon of Vidya knowledge
from you.2
Prathamam Bharati nama, Dvitiyam Cha Saraswati
Page | 56

Tritiyam Sharada Devi Chaturtham Hamsavahini 3

You are adored with the name of Bharati-the eternal sound,
Your second expression is that of Saraswati. The third in the
manifestation is Sharada. The fourth quintessential is of
Hamsa Vahini, who is the symbol of Sattva.3
Pancham Lokavikhyata Shashtam Vageshvari
Saptam Kaumari Prokhta, Ashtam Vara dayini 4
You are adored as the Lokavikhyata, being exceedingly
famous in the world, also you are revered as the Vageshvarithe manifestation of AUM.
Navamam Buddhidhatri Cha, Dashmam Brahmacharini
Ekadashi Chandraganta Dwadasha Tu Bhuvaneshvari 5
Your ninth incarnation is the giver of intellect and as the
Brahmacharini in your tenth incarnation, you impart the
knowledge of Brahman. In your eleventh manifestation you
are the cosmic bell to uphold the universal flux. In your
twelfth incarnation, you are the Divine Mother adored as
Bhuvaneshvari.5
Iti Shri Dwadash namani Trisandhya Pathet Narah
Tasya Vasti Jihwagre Sarva Shulka Saraswati
Any person reciting these great twelve names at the time of
Three twilights, gets higher merits. Divine Mother Saraswati
finds her abode on the tip of the tongue of that person.
Page | 57

We are the descendents of that Sharada Devi, whose

abode is on the banks of Kishen Ganga in POK. It is our
sacred duty to invoke Shri Sharada Devi in our socio
religious functions. One more important Siddhapitha is
at Sharadi Ba in Kulusa Bandipur, Kashmir. The Sharada
Devi is of the Pure Sattva white color.
Shri Sharada Patu Nah!
May Shri Sharada Devi protect us!

Bhaagayada Lakshmi Baarammaa

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rnEaqI47Rcw/SaayHt1E4_I/AAAAAAAAACQ/eku8D0C3Ob8/S660/untitled.jpg

This is a very popular Kannada kirtana composed by Purandara Dasa. The

saint invites the Goddess Mahalakshmi, very lovingly, to visit the homes of Her
devotees and addresses Her as You are our dear Mother (Nam mam maa
nee). The transliteration scheme used here is that for pronounciation in
either Hindi or Marathi. Thus, nam () would be pronounced more like
(num) with the broken na and ma sounds unlike the same in Sanskrit. The
same goes for mam (), which would be like the English mum.

Acknowledgments
This document is actually the combined effort of all the ladies of the Canton,
Michigan (USA) Navarathri group who have been hosting the Navarathri
celebrations over the last several years in their homes each season. My sincere
and grateful thanks to all of them.
I would also like to thank Smt. Janaki Mahadevan and Sriman Lakshmi
Narasimhan for proof reading my Devanagari rendition of the Purandara
dasas divine Kannada composition (Bhagyada Lakshmi baarammaa) which is
sung by all during the Navarathri poojas and on many other occasions as well.
Let us all be showered by the blessings of Devi, as Purandara dasa extols in his
immortal song. As the Navarathri season progresses, I look forward to adding
some photos of the lovely Canton group to updates of this document.
