LOCAL AND STATE RESOURCES

Studio 45
101 Greenwood Petoskey, MI 49770 (231) 709-6738 Students can attend a performance of dancers performing hip hop dance. They can also be encouraged to sign up for dance classes from the studio in fusion dance and ballet as well as hip hop. This would be a fun thing to do when talking about patterns in math and how it is important to learn dance steps through pattern and repetition of them.

Two Left Feet Dance Instruction

06685 M66 N #148 Charlevoix, MI 49720 (231) 547-6114 This dance studio focuses on classical ballroom dance such as rumba, mambo, tango and cha-cha. It would be ideal to have the instructors to come in and show basic moves with a focus on dance etiquette after a discussion in science about space, personal space, and how our bodies move in space. Dance etiquette focuses on how bodies move together at appropriate distances and how the moves flow together.

Crooked Tree Arts Center

461 East Mitchell Street Petoskey, MI 49770 (231) 347-4337 The Arts Center is a Gallery and performing arts center. It is a great place to take children to view art from different genres. When performances are held, students can go to see them as a class or encouraged to have their parents take them. Performances range from theatre, musical and singing, as well as dance including ballet and fusion.

Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center

Harbor Springs High School 500 Spring Street Harbor Springs, MI 49740 (231) 526-4840 The HSPAC hosts performances in dance, music and theatre both professionally and student oriented. Students can be taken to any number of performances put on by other schools such as school plays and musicals. The Young Americans also perform here and put on workshops for students to drum up interest and talk about how important incorporating the arts into ones life can be. You could also rent the center to host your own school play that you as a class could have put together and would play well into a social studies curriculum where reenacting history is such an effective way for students to learn it.

Little Traverse Civic Theatre

461 East Mitchell Street Petoskey, MI 49770 (231) 348-1850 The Little Traverse Civic Theatre puts on a couple of plays/musicals per year and students from all over the area are encouraged to try out for parts. Students that do not get a major role will be included one

way or another. I would like to have the students not just consider trying out for a part, but also to take the class to a performance put on by the Theatre. Language Arts can always be tied into anything done theatrically so I would see what performance was coming up and start with reading any book that the performance was based on and encourage students to write their own songs, plays or narratives for the story.

Young Americans
1132 Olympic Drive Corona, CA 92881 (951) 493-6753 The Young Americans theatre group is a troupe of inspirational young people (ages 17-25) that travel the world performing and encouraging interest in the arts. I would have my students attend one of their performances, view one online, or go to an informational session put on by the Young Americans to get inspiration from people closer to their age that have succeeded because of the arts.

PO Box 199 9900 Diamond Park Rd Interlochen, MI 49643-0199 (231) 276-7200 Interlochen showcases musical, theatre, art and dance performances throughout the year performed not only professionally, but also by students of the center. Any time during the year that a particular genre of art can tie in to what is being learned, the teacher could plan a trip to the center to view a performance or experience the art firsthand by students and professionals.
