CUTTING OUT:
Using the pattern provided cut out 4 pieces: three of fabric one of fleece.

3 2 1

STEP ONE: POCKET

1. Fold the (#1) fabric piece for the pocket in half crosswise, wrong sides together. Press. Using ruler and Chalk-o-liner, measure and mark the stitching guidelines for pockets. Pin pocket piece (#1) to the right side of fabric piece (#2) with raw edges even along the bottom edge. Stitch along pocket lines from raw edge to pocket fold and backstitch (diagram B)

POCKET EDGE
1.

Once the pocket stitching lines are complete, secure the outer edge by stitching 3/8 from the edge

QUILTING THE BACK

1. Pin pieces #3 and #4 together, so that the right side of the fabric is showing. 2. With your chalk-o-liner, or vanishing pen, and a large ruler, draw quilting lines on your fabric. They may be on the diagonal as shown or vertical and horizontal. 3. Starting at the center lines, stitch all the lines in one direction.

QUILTING THE BACK

4. Once you have done one direction, carefully draw and sew the quilting lines in the opposite direction. 5. Stitch a narrow 3/8 seam, (width of the presser foot), all the way around this quilted piece.

ATTACHING THE ELASTIC THREAD GUIDES

1. Draw a chalk line from one of your stitching pocket lines, extending across the fabric piece #2 to the top.

2.

Stitch one end of your elastic securely at the bottom of this stitching line.
Using a spool of thread as a guide, measure and pin the length of elastic you need to hold a spool of thread in place.

3.

ELASTIC THREAD HOLDERS

4. Stitch the elastic down securely to the pocket piece and piece #2. Continue measuring, marking, and stitching until you have loops of elastic going up the whole width of piece #2.

(TIP: start to sew in the middle of the elastic, stitching 2 stitches forward, 2 stitches back, then forward again, ending back in the middle of the elastic.)

FINISHED THREAD HOLDERS!

TIES:
You need two ties, one for the tape measure, and one to hold your scissors in place. You may use a length of ribbon, or a tube of coordinating fabric (using the fast-turn method) If using ribbon, all raw edges must be turned under and stitched, of the ribbon will fray quickly. If using the fast-turn method, please ask for a demo.

TRIMMING THE CORNER AND TURNING THE TUBE

THE NEEDLE FLAP

1. The needle flap is made by cutting three pieces ( 2 of fabric, and one of fleece), 11 cm by 8 cm. 2. Stitch all three pieces together in a sandwich, approx. 1 cm from the cut edge, then finish the edge by using pinking shears. 3. Place your finished needle flap in position on piece #2, and stitch down securely.

THE FRONT OF THE SEWING KIT - FINISHED!

ATTACH THE FRONT OF THE SEWING KIT TO THE BACK QUILTED SECTION
1. Press, then pin the front of the sewing kit to the back quilted section. 2. Stitch around all sides at 3/8 (width of the presser foot), so that the kit will lie flat while you apply the bias tape.

CHECK YOUR DIMENSIONS

1.

Measure both the length and width of your sewing kit. Adjust, if necessary.

EXTRA WIDE DOUBLE FOLD BIAS TAPE

1.

Choose double fold extra wide bias tape for your binding. Or, if you like, you can choose to create your own bias tape from matching or contrasting fabric.

STEAM BIAS TAPE BEFORE USING

STARTING THE BIAS BINDING APPLICATION

1. Start on one long edge. 2. Open the bias binding out, and pin the raw edge flush with the raw edge of the sewing kit. 3. Fold the raw edge under at the beginning of the tape.

OUTSIDE TIES
1. Make two ties for the outer closures. 2. Attach securely to the raw edge on the quilted side of one short side of your kit.

START STITCHING THE BIAS TAPE

1.

Machine stitch the first few inches of bias tape to your project. Stitch in the ditch of the fold line of the tape. Stop 8-10 cm from the curve of the corner.

START HAND BASTING

1. As you hand baste the corners, use small stitches (a), and push the bias binding so that it compresses. 2. The best result is when the bias binding actually stands (b) vertical in the corners. Do not allow tucks or pleats in the binding.

(b)

THE STRAIGHT EDGES

Make sure that your hand stitches stay in the ditch of the bias tape. Your subsequent machine stitches will follow this line as well.

1.

BASTE THE ENTIRE BIAS BINDING TO THE SEWING KIT

1. Hand baste the whole outer edge of the sewing kit, finishing by overlapping the tape at the start again.

STITCHING THE SEAM

1.

If the tape lies smoothly, machine sew over your hand basting.

SECOND ROW OF STITCHING

1. Carefully press the first seam up and then fold the binding over the edge of the kit and pin exactly over the first line of stitching. 2. Baste the second fold of the binding so it flows smoothly around the corners, and covers all previous stitching. YOUR SEWING KIT MUST LIE FLAT!

THE FINAL STEP!

1. Press, then stitch so that the second row of stitching lies in an even line on the first side of the kit. 2. Give your project a final press, and hand in with your MARK SHEET!
