Editing Quiz

Directions: Get with someone else who did not have their draft completed and complete the items outlined. 1. Fold a sheet of paper into four sections. 2. Put your name at the very top section. 3. Label each section the following: a. Introduction b. Body Paragraph #1 c. Body Paragraph #2 d. Body Paragraph #3 4. Staple that sheet on top of your essay. 5. Now switch papers. 6. Read their introduction, and then answer the following questions on their top sheet under the section, Introduction. a. Did their hook grab your attention? b. Did they lead into the topic? c. Did their thesis statement state their topic of their essay, opinion and two reasons they will use to support their opinion? d. Overall, how effective was their introduction? What can they do to improve the paragraph? 7. Read their body paragraph #1, and then answer the following questions on their top sheet under the section, Body Paragraph #1. a. Did they have a topic sentence? b. Did their details/examples fully support their opinion about their topic? c. Did they have a concluding statement? d. Overall, how effective was their body paragraph #1? What can they do to improve the paragraph? 8. Read their body paragraph #2, and then answer the following questions on their top sheet under the section, Body Paragraph #2. a. Did they have a topic sentence? b. Did their details/examples fully support their opinion about their topic? c. Did they have a concluding statement? d. Overall, how effective was their body paragraph #1? What can they do to improve the paragraph? 9. Read their conclusion, and then answer the following questions on their top sheet under the section, Conclusion. a. Look back at their thesis statement found in their introduction. Now look back at the first sentence of their conclusion. Did they restate the thesis using different words, but said the same thing? b. Did they summarize the points made in body paragraphs #1 and #2? c. Did they have an ending statement? d. Overall, how effective was their conclusion? What can they do to improve their concluding paragraph? Directions: You will edit your own paper for the items outlined. Once you are finished you need to show this to me to get graded for the quiz, and to get a computer to start formatting your newspaper and essay. Make those sentences stand out 1. Highlight the first sentence in one color. 2. Highlight the second sentence in a different color. 3. Continue highlighting the rest of your essay by alternating colors.

Did you start every sentence with the same word? 1. Box the first word of each sentence. 2. Did you start off the sentence the same way? 3. If so, change the first word. You must have variety when you are writing. Getting rid of It 1. Triangle the word it every time you see it. 2. What is it referring to? Contractions do not belong in an essay 1. Put a line through any contraction you see. 2. A contraction has an apostrophe and a shortened version of a word. i. e. dont, wont cant, theyre, yall, etc. 3. You must spell out the contraction. Dont=do not Get rid of these words 1. Put an X over the following words a. Real b. Really c. Very d. Some e. Like (unless you are using a simile) f. Well (unless you are referring to illness) Fanboys 1. Circle any of these fanboys a. For b. And c. Nor d. But e. Or f. Yet g. So 2. Were you using them as a coordinating conjunction? 3. If so, you must have a complete sentence on both sides and a comma before the fanboy.
