Lesson Plan 3 Slope Formula

Instructional Focus: Lessons will actively involve students in their learning process through increased teacher use of appropriately challenging and engaging lesson design.

Curriculum Standards Addressed:

Goal 5: The learner will understand and use linear relations and functions. 5.01: Develop an understanding of function. c. Find, identify, and interpret the slope (rate of change) and intercepts of a linear relation. What will students KNOW as a result of this lesson? 1. The meaning of: a. Coordinate plane b. Y-intercept c. X-intercept d. Function e. Negative slope f. Positive slope g. Zero slope h. Undefined slope 2. How to identify the different types of formulas 3. How to identify the types of slope Materials: Student Notebooks for note taking Work Sheet Weekly Essential Sheets Weekly HW Sheet What SKILLS will students develop during this lesson? What will they be able to DO? 1. How to find the slope using the slope formula

EQ: How do I find the slope of a linear function?

Assessment Tools and/or Processes for this lesson:

Observation of students as they complete the worksheet by walking around will enable me to determine if students understand the slope formula and are able to solve the problems. I will also look for which students are helping and which students need help or are not engaged. Students who are not able to correctly solve for the slope using two point or who cannot identify whether a line indicates positive, negative, zero or undefined slope will need additional time on these concepts.

Whole class practice will bring out specific problems students have with the material and will help me to determine which students have a solid understanding and can identify the different types of formulas and the types of slopes. I will observe which students cannot use two points to find the slope and which students cannot identify positive, negative, zero or undefined slope. Students will also be asked to assess their understanding of the material by putting a 1-5 on their worksheet. Five means that the student feels that he/she has full understanding and that it is very easy. One means that the student feels that he/she has no understanding of the material. The TOD will help assess the students understanding and ability to solve the problems on their own. If students cannot properly graph the functions they will need more practice on function tables and plotting points. If they cannot identify the type of slope when they have found the slope using the slope formula, they will need additional practice on identifying type of slope. These tools will allow me to adjust the timeline based on the need to go back over the material or to move forward.
