I wanted some ice cream; I had two main observations: I have noticed that ice cream is made by a motorized machine that takes electricity to run it.
Ice cream makers takes about 1 hour to make with an electric maker (thats not counting the electricity used to freeze it afterward). There was no information on the internet, but if if we assume it uses about the same as a blender it uses 300 watt hours a day. http://www.absak.com/library/power-consumptiontable It takes a little over a pound of coal to make 1 kilowatt of electricity. http://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.cfm?id=667&t=6
I observe that ice cream is a process that takes kinesthetic energy to create. Usually it is made using electricity which is nonsustainable.
I will try to make ice cream without using electricity. When I was a child we used to make it with old fashion handcrank ice cream maker. I could not find any in India, so I found an idea in a magazine for an ice creamer maker you make out of two different sized cans and you roll around until the ice cream is made.
Yummy! I realize it is possible to make ice cream using sustainable kinesthetic energy.
H.Consider scientific models and applications of these models (including their limitations)
I like this method of making ice cream because it is environmentally friendly and fun to do with friends. It would be fun at a picnic down a hill. The only drawback is it takes a lot of effort and is rather messy for indoors. Also, you can only make a little bit at a time. However, if you have a nice day with friends it is a fun way to make a yummy treat. Next time I would definitely try adding chocolate or nuts!
