What Career is a good Fit for Me?

MBTI Assignment

My favorite type of test is the one where there is no right or wrong answer; I particularly enjoy tests that will help me understand where my opportunities and strengths are. The MyersBriggs test helps you do just that, based on your answers, one of sixteen different personality types is possible. The ultimate goal of this test is to help individual understand where their strengths weaknesses lie, and therefore possibly helping them determine what type of career may best suit them (Cherry, n.d.). I really enjoyed this personality test, with me being a young professional a lot of times I find out what I enjoy doing by trial and error. It actually surprised me how accurate the test was to the tasks I excel at in my current position. My personality type is ESTJ and I will describe to you how each of these areas relate to my personal and professional preferences (Leverage your Personality Type). Extrovert or Introvert The E stands for extrovert, I know that am far more extroverted than I am introverted, currently I work in the back office of a bank and it is very obvious I dont fit in there. While everyone else prefers to just work and doesnt need to talk to a person all day, I thrive on people interaction. The Human Resource department recognizes the mismatch and they are encouraging me to work in a front office role, while I look in my options they have asked me to get out in the community so that my need for people interaction can be met. I was home schooled from the 1st grade until I got to college, while I was home schooled I was extremely introverted and felt more comfortable keeping to myself. Sensing or Intuitive S for sensing, I see this daily in my work I enjoy doing system analysis work when I look at our commercial system and try out new things. I log what I tried and see how the system reacts to what I did. My boss has told me that I get too caught up in the details or a project sometimes

when I just need to look at the big picture. In my head you cant get a big picture until all the facts are inline. This is the only area I was extremely close on; I was right on the border of being intuitive. The only characteristic of Sensing I didnt agree with is the fact I need to learn by being hands on. I will often times look at the experiences someone else has been through and learn from them. With that being said however experiences to speak louder to me than words, a characteristic of sensing (Myers-Briggs Foundation, n.d.). Thinking or Feeling T for thinking, when I read through this description I knew it was me when I saw this personality type likes analyzing pros and cons. I am the queen of pros and cons lists, I have a list for what degree I should get, what job I should move to, I even made one about my husband before we got married! Another reason I am heavily thinking orientated is that I need to have a logical explanation for everything Myers-Briggs Foundation, n.d.). A way I found this out is a project I did with our audit department. They gave me 15 accounts that they could not figure out why the system charged them what it did. They were questioning the late charges assessed on some account and the interest accrual on others. I love digging into the account and tearing it apart to see why the system charged the customer like they did, what triggered the system to assess the fee. For every single account there was a logical reason why the system did what it did. I can relate this trait to my personal life also, anytime I have a big decision to make I always take my emotions out of it. If I need to take a couple days to calm down before I make a decision I will do it to make sure I am being rational and not emotional. Just this week a had a family decision to make and I made my pros and cons list and tried as hard as I could to not let my feelings play a part in the outcome (Myers-Briggs Foundation, n.d.)

Judging or Perceiving Lastly J for judging, you know the saying rules are made to be broken? I hate that saying; rules are made to be followed not broken! I wont lie I was a little discouraged when the test said I was judging but after reading what that meant and seeing the description specifically says it does not mean judgmental I felt better. The list I found says judging refers to being decisive, organized, and structured.. (Personality Tests and Types, n.d.) All of these are me, my desk at work is always neat and tidy, when you open up my filing drawers they are all color coded and organized in alphabetical order (Myers-Briggs foundation, n.d.). I am also a planner, I have my personal goals pinned to a goals board in my bathroom so every morning while I am brushing my teeth I look at my goal and set out a plan of what I am going to do to hit those goals. I have the same goals board for my work achievements. I like to be in control of my future and the only way I can do that is to plan for it!

For me personally this test was right on track. I am naturally an extrovert and I enjoy working with people but my passion is analytical work I have numerous examples of how I fall into the categories that the test says I would. After the assessment I looked around the site and suggested job for me was a business roll possible I management. I feel like every professional should take this test at one point in their early career and it would help get them in an area of work they would most likely enjoy.
