Economic Botany 38: 34, 1984) family: Pandanaceae taxonomy : section Karuka; sub-genus Lophostigma; family Pandanaceae; order Pandanales; group Monocotyledone; class Angiosperm. The section Karuka of the genus Pandanus (l.) parkinson consists of two species: Pandanus brosimos merr. & perry and Pandanus iwen b.c. stone [sp. nov.]. These species are poorly understood (stone 1984a). Botanist benjamin c. stone, an authority on the genus Pandanus (see stone 1974; stone 1976; stone 1982), also suggests that Pandanus carrii st. john is a third species in this section (stone 1984a; stone 1984b).

During the pandanus season (September to January), natives may gorge themselves on the nut and a small percentage of them become excited, restless, threatening, or actually dangerous. An observer who has lived in New Guinea for a number of years states that the condition lasts about 12 hours. He records that natives dance violently, become uninhibited and may attempt to attack one another. He recalls in the Highlands several men falling from rope bridges and drowning when in a confused atoxic state. It is possible there is a strong hysterical factor in the

result, hyndman ( 1984 ) argued that it is highly desirable for a reexamination to be made of the nutbearing Pandanus to see if dmt is a routine constituent of any or all Pandanus nuts. Preliminary chemical analysis of P. brosimos fruit (nuts) from Minj (Western Highlands Province) indicated the presence of indolealkylamine (tryptamine) compounds (See table 1). This preliminary chemical analysis used presumptive microcrystalline [colour reagent] tests but is necessary for further chemical analyses of P. brosimos with gaschromatography coupled with mass-spectrometry (gc-ms) and high-performance liquid-chromatography (hplc), that are amongst the most advanced techniques in analytical chemistry for the identification of indolealkylamine (spaggiari 2005). pharmacology : In several bioassays, excessive consumption of large quantities of raw karuka nuts resulted in no entheogenic effects but were followed by stomachache and diarrhoea ( goddard 1999 ; hyndman 1996; thomas in press). It is well-known that dmt has no entheogenic activity by the oral route (ott 1999; shulgin 1976; szra 1956). The presence of dmt in P. brosimos does not explain reports of entheogenic effects when eaten in Papua New Guinea (thomas 2003 ). It is suggested that oral dmt is activated by monoamine oxidase inhibitors (maoi) and it is possible that, if plants containing substances with mao -inhibitory activity were ingested with Pandanus nuts, the effect would be entheogenic (thomas 2000). There may be unidentified mao inhibitors in Pandanus nuts themselves. More research on the exact mechanism of action of P. brosimos nuts known to contain dmt and other indole compounds is required to explain the alleged oral activity of these karuka nuts (thomas in press).
